BT ( basic trash ; ) )Checkers are usually slightly underestimating peoples connections by about 3-5Mbps but are indicative of the speed you would get.
It wont matter what trace you use , they will all pull the data from BT's data base.

This site has most of the info you would ever need including line distances etc.

If theres any chance of going with Virgin media i would do that though to be honest.

Sign up with a broadband provider that had a line speed guarantee. That way you'll get the speed promised or you'll get compensation/or move supplier. Plusnet are one ISP that offer this ....

Thinking of moving from virgin to sky for broadband - Does anyone have any experience with Sky broadband, that they’d like to share?

With Plusnet (ST17) was surprised to get 18.7Mb Download and 5.7Mb upload, perhaps better than normal as late on a Sunday night.

I'm looking at changing who my broadband provider is as looking at saving some pennies, how do people find using plusnet?

We've had Plusnet for 2 years after switching from BT infinity, we did see a downgrade in speed but we can still use Netflix Iplayer etc. Otherwise its fairly reliable with no downtime, my only concern would be that customer service is slow to get through.

We moved to Plusnet fibre from BT a few Months ago....
The downloads speeds are slightly lower than BT (not much that you would notice).

Router is similar to the BT one, supports external hard drives for file sharing which is good.

Plusnet is handy on that you can buy a year's worth on the phone standing charges saving around 40% on the monthly charges.

Plusnet is owned by BT.
It is indeed, but it is run independently from BT and is world away from BT in terms of price and service.

I also moved, last year, from BT to Plusnet after getting completely frustrated by BT's lack of customer service and inability to sort out the simplest of problems, that they had created in the first place.

With Plusnet, I find my download speed is a bit more variable (sometimes a bit lower, sometimes a bit higher) than BT's, but perfectly acceptable. Also, the Plusnet TV box is effectively the same as BT's, just a branded version of the same box.

All in all a much better experience than BT, and a lot less expensive as well.

Good point about the Plusnet box being the same as the BT Hub, After our Plusnet box installation was delayed we installed the BT Hub one and after some jiggery-pokery by Plusnet we were connected to their network. Not sure if this is a one off but after 30 months we still access to our BT email accounts in addition to the Plusnet ones, which is a bonus. Perhaps others can confirm if they still have BTinternet email access or we are just one off's.

Not broadband, just a TV service, but someone I know decided to move to BT from Virgin, then decided that BT was useless and moved back.

Upon the reconnection to Virgin being 'completed', she decided that the mess they had left between them, abandoned cables, wall-drilling debris, etc., needed to be reduced in scope. So, I removed the 'spare' cables and the spoil heap from the wall drilling operations.

Later on, it was discovered that the TV service was not operational - so, this was obviously my fault!

Upon returning to the scene, I eventually discovered that the power supply for the Virgin box was only partially inserted into the wall socket and had disconnected itself, turning their box off. A further inspection found that the TV plug was also in the same 'barely connected' mode, although it hadn't actually disconnected itself at that point. The signal wire into the Virgin box was discovered to be connected rather 'delicately' and signal was lost was the slightest movement of the cable, so I redid the connection there, too. Then I noticed that there was a power supply transformer, still plugged in, but not connected to anything, so I removed that.

Other than that, it was OK.

Aaargh - my BT connection has just gone down - fault reported and identifed as being 'on the network' but it scuppers my primary plan of entertaing the boy with boneb watching Jake and the Neverland pirates on Disney life all weekend.

All this made me decide to check my broadband speeds. Have dual band wifi so on the first speed check site tried it on both Band 2 and Band 5, then tested it on two other broadband check sites on band 5. All tests run within a period of 4-5 mins. Mb/s

Speed check site 1
Band 2 Download 35.14 Upload 9.14
Band 5 Download 51.28 Upload 9.36

Site 2. Download 45.3 Upload 9.8

Site 3. Download 50.58 Upoad 9.27

I'm sure it all means something

Having just moved to Stafford from a village on the outskirts of Stone, the broadband speeds available (in the centre of Stafford) are pretty rubbish compared to what I used to be getting. I would have expected it to be the other way round.

Lot more people using the same bit of "pipe" so you're going to see a drop in speed.

Switch to Virgin Media if you want the huge speeds.

76MB down to 30-40mb. BT don't even sell their next package up (Superfast Fibre 2). Yet's it's available 3 minutes down the road.

Virgin isn't available.
