I'm sorry, but that doesn't look like a real hole in the ground, it looks like you have painted it on. How big is it?

based on my infinite experience of holes in the road caused by water (and my cellar!)....

my suspicion is that theres been a water leak that has washed away the soil underneath the tarmac and the tarmac has subsequently fallen in.

That hole was chuffing deep. Sofa's pic shows the hole in the tarmac, but there was also a massive cavity under it. No wonder they had to dig up so much of the road to fix it.

Cookie_Monster's explanation regarding water washing away the soil is probably correct. It certainly looked that way.

Nowhere near finished. They've barriered off most of that side of the street, parked an enormous digger there and dug a second hole, further down the road than the first. It must've been really bad...

Correction - what I thought was a second hole was actually a device to stop the sides caving in placed on the road. There's only one hole, but it's a whopper....

A double sewer has collapsed!
if you have cellars....check them!!!!

ive been on the receiving end of a whopping 7 main sewage and water mains leaks since april last year....and things are far from being sorted at the mo.

to be fair, if theres anything in them- you will know about it already as the stench can be unbearable.

if any 'water' in your cellar can be proved to have come from the pipes, then severn trent (that is the water co in stafford isnt it?) should pay for your property to be cleaned up, sanitized and dried out. you may also be eligible for a rebate of some sorts (im still waiting for my second cheque for £150 mind).

and best of luck, youll bloody need it! so far from my experience, the water companies are useless, insurance companies and the loss adjusters they employ are also useless. if i knew how to solve the issues, this would have been dealt with months ago.
