Dangerous pedestrian crossing

the overlap is too short approx 3 seconds isn't enough for town-based traffic to clear the junction and allow right turn traffic to also clear the junction.i would imagine it would need around 6 seconds for this to happen.

Not sure if this crossing is still the same but it used to have the audible sounders when the Geen Man was lit. This is obviously an even more dangerous situation if a blind person is reliant upon the soundest to tell them it isn't safe to cross.

That may explain why I’ve noticed that the sound has been switched off on some of the crossings I’ve come across recently.

I use this crossing every day pretty much, it's horrible to navigate as a pedestrian, it doesn't matter which part of the crossing you use.

How do I edit this?
I personally hate the crossing opposite more, so always stick to that side of the road.

Crossing over Riverway by the dentist? I'm curious as to why you hate it?

The lights do take an age, but it's usually straightforward to get across when the lights on Lichfield Road are green as the no right turn signs heading town-wards means that traffic can only come from one place. The only time I ever come unstuck is when someone declines to use their indicators....

I much prefer crossing on that side of the street there.

That whole area has been laid out to be as bad for pedestrians as possible though. Getting into the Hough on foot from either direction involves sometimes-hairy jumps across the access roads that would be unnecessary if they had just put the path in a slightly different place.

There's knurled wheel underneath the control panel with the button for the crossing, that spins when it is safe to cross. So in this case, if that is turning you'll get people stepping out into the traffic.

now over 3 pages on this subject but has anybody actually bothered to report timing fault to get it fixed?

Yes and I would agree, except practically nobody is stopping at this crossing. So something needs to be fixed.
I've nearly been mown down several times there, it's only with being aware and managing a quick sprint that's kept me reaching the other side.
Not only those left waiting in the yellow box that are turning right when the green man is on are the culprits. Lots are still driving towards their red lights and choosing to take advantage of the fact traffic from the other directions has stopped, and sod the pedestrians half way across that crossing.

Whilst waiting to cross in the October half term hols, I witnessed a female in a big 4x4 with kids in the car, following another car that was going through the red lights from riverway towards the hough. She hadn't even noticed the lights as she was looking down typing away on her phone! How I was wishing I'd have been a cop to pull her up.

In all fairness this is a quite a standard set up.

You go to stoke at cobridge lights and lime kiln bank where there are multiples of lanes with no filter for cars turning right from any direction. When the lights turn red for oncoming traffic, those who have been trying to turn right have to then scamper across after the lights have turned red can go straight into pedestrian lights on the green man without realising, especially at the latter set.

At cobridge, there is not even any lights on the opposite set of lights ( no filter either) informing drivers attempting to turn right, when the oncoming traffic has to stop. Meaning until a driver visually clocks the oncoming cars have stopped this is the only notice for cars turning right that they can go, but this is delayed and commonly then meet cars coming from right and left that are now on green, sometimes then straight in pedestrian lights.

In all the years I have gone those ways I have never seen a pedestrian incident at those lights. Now that is the question, is there really an issue to cause concern and are pedestrians and road users savvy enough to be alert and avoid such matters and take responsibility and just able to deal with it at such as risky junction.

I'm au fait with most the crosssings in Stafford as I walk everywhere and I agree some of them are quite challenging. It's always wise to check the traffic and not rely on the green man. I nearly got run over once on the Sainsburys crossing when a driver drove straight through a red.

Enjoying a drop of red.
Never assume anyone is going to stop until you actually see them come to a standstill. That applies to car drivers, bikers, cyclists, pedestrians and especially drivers of commercial vehicles.

That happened to me on the crossing by Green Hall a few weeks ago especially since I had the boy strapped to me really scary and made me very angry

The brick wall does obscure people waiting to cross into town there - it's not much of an excuse, but crossing on the other side, where the White Lion was, is probably a safer bet. I've see a few brake-tests on the Green Hall side. It's probably less of an issue when the pedestrian is heading out-of-town. It could be worth crossing over by St Paul's...?

There is definitely a difference, "psychologically", between crossings which are part of "real traffic lights" and crossings which are "just for the convenience of pedestrians"...

don't mention the blinds
Sorry to bang on re the Newport rd/station rd junction, but surely there is now an argument for regulatory alignment.....

Thought this might be worth a bump I've heard someone has been knocked over at this crossing today, or around there at least.

--Not confirmed, just hearsay at the moment

There was an incident on that stretch of Lichfield Rd but not a road traffic collision.

Oh I'm not sure where this person got seeing someone knocked over from then

Well i've just seen this on spotted stafford (where else!)

Someone was being resuscitated
Must be quite serious as there were 3 ambulances and lots of police cars with more ambulances arriving as I was stuck in the queues.

at least 3 emergency vehicles went down my street was wondering what on earth was going on
