Zanzibar is dead!

Got told last night Zanzi has shut down and all staff have been made redundant, they officially closed yesterday so it will not be opening again....

I know for a fact it was losing £4.5K per month and some nights they were having as few as 50 odd people in so it was inevitable and the staff have been expecting it...obvo Casa & Love 2 Love have taken a lot of the business away plus its just rubbish in there!

Got this info from one of the staff I was tapping who rang me straight after finding out

SO

Thats it...no more Zanzi....whats next? Hoopefully someone will come in and turn the place into the type of club we need in Stafford

Your thoughts?

btw this is 100% accurate and genuine...it HAS gone!

Best thing for the place really.

Only thing is, it'll be another building in Stafford that will be left to rot I reckon which is shame.

I can't see anyone taking on that place and reopening in the near future to be honest, not in the current climate.. (pubs shutting all over the place, smoking ban etc. etc.)

And to think of the profits it used to make! I worked there for 6 years and they were raking it in.

Lets face it, the smoking ban is pretty much killing off all places without smoking facilities. Now I don't smoke, so shouldn't care, but all my friends do!

EDIT: Just realised, thats less drunk idiots near my house at night. Yay!

Smoking ban has defo caused problems but at least they did have a smoking area

out of interest...the smoking area at Zanzi cost £6K per month from the council....councils must be loving this smoking ban!

wow, i never thought i'd see the day zanzi shut down.. i thought it would live forever, surviving all ills - like a cockroach lol..

that place is a right of passage for teenagers growing up in stafford.. i know it's a god-awful hell hole, but the majority of us spent a good few nights in there learning the ways of the world (as it were).. i wonder if it will reopen under a different guise?

Just found out from Facebook...apparently there's a goodbye Zanzi party on Friday...now TOTALLY unsure about times because it says:

Time and Place

Start Time: Friday, October 3, 2008 at 9:00pm
End Time: Sunday, October 5, 2008 at 3:00am
Location: Zanzibar
City/Town: Stafford, United Kingdom

Now far be it from me to not attend a good party but surely if I drank at my usual rate I would be dead by the Sat night....but this goes on to Sunday?!

WTF

Hi, and thanks for the interest but as far as I know this will be a private affair for Staff / ex workers and friends of staff so joe public probably won't be allowed to enter the building.

Back to the topic at hand,

It looks like it's just 'being rested' till they have the spare cash to injet into in to relaunch it - So unless Nexum Leisure get a substantial amount for the place, they're not going to sell it.

Listening to the grape vine, look out for a re-opening in 2010!

But in the mean time (before we shut), there was talk of leasing downstairs off to another club, so that may still happen.

Can't say I'm particularly sad to hear it. Granted its a shame for the staff, I do feel for them. But the influx of 100's of drunked idiots being ejected onto the street simultaneously won't be missed. Not by me anyhow.

What do you have in mind? One with REAL dj's would be top of my list.

I think maybe turn it into something USEFUL for the community... maybe some sort of debating club.

How about something this lil ol' town has never had? A cassino would make a nice change. There's enough pubs, clubs & kebab houses to fill new york for crying out loud.
Fair play, gambling isnt for everyone, but for those who like a flutter there's only bookies and bingo really. I've had many a good night at Grosvenor in Hanley on just a £20 note. I just dont go very often as its not local enough.

I dunno, people are tightening their belts so I wouldn't think a casino would do well. Bear in mind the investment involved and staff costs etc. Not sure each punter using it once in a while and taking a 20 would do it.

Dunno what I'd suggest, I've become a boring! Don't go out much anymore. One thing I have noted this year though, is that there's sod all places in town you can take kids really. Anywhere that has a wacky warehouse or somesuch thing is out of town, which means driving. The zanzibar site is probably too big for that by far, but it is something the town is lacking.

As a building it's even more hideous than it was as a venue. Knock it down and plant a few trees or something.

It was built to hold a nightclub, not to win design awards. Looks like a bingo hall to me though.

How about a chav prison? Tell them its still 99p drinks, spike their stella and throw away the key :D

Or maybe we could do something with it for bonfire night? :strange:

 Hilarious!

What about making a bigger and better Vision? That was easily the best bar in stafford in the last few years, I really miss the place. Always seemed to be more straights than gays in the place too, strange for a gay bar. I think it was because Tek dragged most of the business into there!
