How do I edit this?
Thanks for that.

I think what annoys me is that what we listen to isn't what most people listen to, so if royalties are distributed based on a sample I'm more than likely paying artists I hate while those I like get nothing. Plus, like you say, an awful lot goes to the record companies anyway not the artists.

I don't want to sound too down on the whole thing - I think the system as a whole works about as well as you could expect & those who administer it are aware of it's shortcomings and are keen for smaller scale musicians like myself to tell them when & where we know our music is being used so that they can pay out accordingly.

It's also improved greatly with technology & most local radio stations of the Stafford FM scale now have software that records & submits the music played to PRS so the royalties paid are an exact reflection of what goes on air.

As for record companies & publishers, they have a role to play in getting the music out to a mainstream audience & I think most musicians who sign with them make the educated decision that a smaller percentage of a much larger pie is a worthwhile trade-off.

I'm trying to think if I've ever noticed what kind of music is playing in a shop when I've been browsing - or what music I associate with looking at pretty dresses with - classical seems a bit OTT but banging dance tunes doesn't seem right either.

I have wondered this myself! I do know that my typical choices won't fit.....

I might be inclined to go for gentle indie singer-songwriter type stuff I think, but it would of course depend on the demographic you're trying to appeal to.

You're probably right, but it also has to be something she wants to listen to as she'll be hearing it constantly. I remember when my brother worked at Home Bargains, he hated the CD on repeat they had. I guess once you have a music license you could use something like an alexa to keep churning out similar but different songs? She has a dot, and there are some speakers in the ceiling I may be able to utilise.

Yes, I remember the cd's they made us listen to in Nero - torture after a few days. I imagine an alexa might work quite well - and an easy way to customise the feel of the place depending on who is in / what they're looking at - and if you have specific parties in for instance.

Really?

I have no issue with paying PRS, what I take issue with is the aggressive call centre they use to threaten (and basically lie to) businesses. So much so that for years we only used royalty free music until we worked out that we didn't need to have music at all and that, quite often, people actually like the peace and quiet and much prefer a conversation.

Some Royalty Free music is actually quite good, it's come a long way from the elevator music of old. Some is truly free, the better stuff has a one time cost and you buy it on a SD Card usually, or download it. If you are only using it to get rid of the silence, it's much better value than PRS

Is there some way that you could access customers' phones and play what they like?
Well Alexa's have Bluetooth so you could - which would be ace if they have a wedding playlist while they pick bridesmaids dresses - or that personal touch of ' what do you fancy listening too while you browse' would work

If only the shop had some sort of computer nerd available that could look into this.

It appears that deezer has a flow mode, where it continuously churns out similar stuff. Pretending to be Turkish gets you a deezer family package (6 users) for under £3 a month, I'll give it a go later.

There are various royalty free internet radio stations, I’m sure there would be one that fits the genre you’re looking for

Tec,
As the all knowing Oracle on led lighting…. Where in your opinion is the best place to get a power supply for the ribbon led lighting. I have just bought 20m of these and they didn’t come with the power supply / transformer ☹. Anyplace local? Cheers

What LEDs are they, and how many of them? The most common used were 5050, they use about 0.25w/m so for for 20m of 60/m (again most common, some are 30 per m) you'd need roughly 300w. Are they in a single strip, or is there the ability to use multiple power sources? Over that distance you'll get voltage drop too, so multiple points of power are preferred or you connect the - at the opposite end to the + as long as you have sufficient power.
