Seriously though, people, get a bike.

This town is perfect for it - pretty much flat, all roads in and out are 30mph limited, there are some decent cycle lanes, honest (ok there aren't, but there are some that are almost alright), there is a growing body of people riding in that is creating the kind of critical mass that will make for a better ride for us all, it's getting better.

Actually honestly; 15 years ago, when i came back and started cycling into town, i would see about two other people on the road - do you remember the Asian guy in the shalwar kameez, old dude, big beard, that just rode so nice and slow, cadence of the tortoise? haven't seen him for ages, one presumes he's no longer with us? - and then only every now and then. Now i regularly see people of all shapes and sizes and ages and genders - it has been a big step change, especially when you consider that these are the people taking to the road rather than those that are taking the fantastic traffic-free alternative from the South.

It took me ten minutes to get from Wildwood to the centre of Town (it didn't really take that long, but i am quite fast). I parked my vehicle directly behind my place of work, so from parking space to work place was 0 minutes walk.

How long did it take you to get into town today? Compared to how long it normally takes?

Seriously, get a bike, you'll not regret it. Until you have gone to work with no waterproof clothing, with the kind of faith in the Met Office that you will soon lose, and find that the Earth has become Water at 5 o'clock.

At least you are on your way home, what?

I have a bike but if I am travelling around town and don't need to carry anything bulky, I tend to walk.
Wildwood to town is a fairly pleasant cycle I would imagine, if they get this canal sorted I assume the cycle back will be less arduous.

Cycled to work last Wednesday, weather app on my phone said it was dry all day! Looked liked I'd swam to work by the time I got there

It's not a flat ride up to Baswich from town, it's uphill pretty much most of the way from Queensville.

Enjoying a drop of red.
As I live right on the top of the hill, it’s uphill whichever way I go. From town I cannot get to my house without going uphill.
Fair enough.

Cycling isn't appropriate for everyone after all.

However, if the thing you don't like is hills (and many, many people don't) have you thought about an ebike?

Lol... so from the Queensville roundabout to the Trumpet (Radford Bank Inn in new money) it is an insurmountable uphill slog?
I wonder what 'pretty much' means in this context?
At least half the journey.
This is pure horse manure - if you're looking for ways to justify your own car use, then do it internally - there's no need to make such a fool of yourself in the process.

I don't think that anyone is genuinely going to disagree that, between Queensville and The Trumpet, it is anything other than, well, pretty much flat, what?

After that there is an unquestionable hill. I know as much, because there are many days of the week that i ride it. In the course of doing so i have noticed a hole in your argument

I think we can all agree that hills go one of two ways, only one of which is up...

Actually, i'm going to 'quote' that again, just for the shitz 'n' gigglz -

Dude, i was merely making the point, that i do from time to time, that Stafford is a good town for cycling. I've been riding to work on my bike for 15 years come October. I even manage the Himalayan experience from Queensville to Wildwood!

On Wednesday, someone i know left her house in Moss Pit to drop her children off at Walton before going into town to work. The whole journey took her two hours. Obviously a bike wouldn't have helped her in that particular situation whatsoever, but the journey she took was probably familiar to many Staffordians, we seem to be being banjaxed by oomska on the M6 on an almost weekly basis at the moment.

On Wednesday, at the same time that my acquaintance was taking one hour to get into town in her car, it took me six minutes on my bicycle, just like it always does. The A34/518 was pretty much a car park from Radford all the way to the Island and beyond, but i just rode around it. I was able to park at work as well (by putting my bike round the back) so i didn't even have to walk to work from a car park.

If just one person thinks * hey, that's a good point, i think i'll start riding my bike to work * it helps me - this is not just some enviro what-not. The more bikes on the road, the more that people who drive cars are looking for people who ride bikes when they drive their cars, and i'm more likely to be one of the people they are looking for rather than killing them.

It's basically enlightened self-interest.

I rarely drive into town unless I have too. Its about a 15 minute walk into town from where I live, however it's usually a lot longer when I've got my two children because I'm usually carrying one on my shoulders whilst pushing the other child in the pushchair.

I get really annoyed by the standard of driving in Stafford and the lack of common decency by far too many. It's a regular occurrence for inconsiderate / selfish drivers to block junctions or major through roads in order for them to get a couple of metres further up the road, which causes unnecessary traffic congestion. The biggest culprit of this, in my opinion, are those drivers driving into town from the Lichfield Road because they regularly block the Wolverhampton Road and, thereby, cause large tailbacks because vehicles cant exit Stafford when the lights change.

I would love to see yellow boxes introduced across Stafford and enforcement action taken against any driver that enters the box and blocks traffic.
