"I don't think that anyone is genuinely going to disagree that, between Queensville and The Trumpet, it is anything other than, well, pretty much flat, what?"

Well there's that bit by GEC, unless there's another way over the railway line. Or did something change since I left town?

There is this way under the line - https://www.google.co.uk/maps/place...0x1b47b3d511d85808!8m2!3d52.806693!4d-2.12066 - when I lived in Porlock Avenue it quickly became apparent that the slog up Radford Bank wasn't necessary, there are many less arduous route variations to Weeping Cross and Wildwood.

When I was a child (well 16/17/18) I do recall walking into town 'the back way' along paths and rivers. Not sure I could find it now. Also they built the estate on the flood plain since then - so the paths I knew may be gone.

this would have been 83/84 I guess - through to the first half of 85.

My recollection is of emerging by Riverside somewhere.

It's much more well-defined now. That path emerges at the Measurements Roundabout at Fairway/St Leonards - you can nip up Fairway and then proceed into town along the river.

I cycled that route for the last 10 years of my working career. The route was improved as part of the Asda build agreement?

I use that route regularly on a bike. However, on the return, rather than cycle up through the WX estate, I turn right onto Meadow Ridge and cycle along to Radford Bank, but then turn left on Radford Rise. There’s a short hill but then a barely noticeable incline towards the mini islands at the top of Radford. Seems a lot easier than riding up Radford Bank - and you’re not subject to all the traffic fumes - particularly from trucks and buses dropping into lower gears.

I used to turn right at the canal, then over the first bridge to Osbourne Crescent and Sandringham Road up to Baswich Lane.

Just think that the Radford Rise route is better if you need the Weeping Cross / Cannock Road side. Great going into town Osbourne / Sandringham etc as it's all downhill - but quite a long slog coming up again. Net result is you seem to get to the same elevation but seems a lot easier / quicker via Radford Rise*.
*Disclaimer: It's a private road - think they might close the gates to 'aliens' on one day around Christmas (Christmas Day?) in order to comply with regs.

I see Weston Road has been brought to a standstill by the appearance of a large mound of dirt and no indication of what caused it - no machinery, no workmen, just some dirt, traffic lights and barriers

Mysterious indeed.

Anyone any idea where the 101 bus is routed today whilst the 10k is on?

Their website says it will stop opposite the station but I thought the road from the station to the Windmill was closed.

Usually your posts are quite interesting but this one is just you being a dick.
Correct.

Usually you're completely cool - probably one of the best posters on here by my reckoning.

But if i could count on my hands the amount of times you have poured scorn upon the very idea of people cycling - ooo i can't carry all the things i need to carry ooo there are really big hills ooo there sounds like there is an owl close by so i couldn't possibly ride a bicycle because what would the neighbours think? - i would probably be counting on three to four fingers.

If you would like to push this, i'm more than happy to carry on being a dick by proving my point and scouring the archives...

I'll say again - every now and then i feel like it's appropriate to remind people that the humble bicycle is a more than adequate means of transport for most of the inhabitants of Stafford.

Because quite often the poor travellers of Stafford, caught between the Rock of Junction 13 and the Hard Place of Junction 14, find themselves sitting in their cars for an hour, when a ten minute cycle ride would have done the do.

Topographically, Stafford is 'pretty much flat', though obviously we must make allowances for Baswich - until recently it was not known that this is the only housing estate designed by Escher, and it is, as far as we know, the only place on Earth that both ingress and egress are upward - and we must also allow for the fact that when travelling from the Queensville roundabout to Baswich, @RobUSA seems to think that we must first ride over the railway bridge, cross over the road, and ride back over the railway bridge again, before our haul toward the top of Radford Bank, the dramatic upward trajectory of which has now magically started at the roundabout rather than just after the Trumpet.

We could digress further, and include Castle Bank, Kingston Hill, and the hill that the Hospital is on to further discredit the general hypothesis that all of the rest of Stafford is 'pretty much flat', but it wouldn't really do much to dent the general feeling that, if you think about where most of the people in Stafford live, Stafford is 'pretty much flat'.

Ultimately, if you want to keep driving into town, and when the M6 is banjaxed finding yourself being stuck in your tin-can for the next hour (for what should be a ten minute journey), crawling ever closer to your overpriced parking spot, knock yourself the f**k out. I'm just saying there's an alternative.

So Stafford is basically built into a bowl !!! .. the only way out is up. Meaning the only way in is down. (Definite pop song title there somewhere.)

Purely out of interest that would make it an ideal test site for a low altitude air burst of a nuclear weapon. Bit like a radio dish, get the bomb close to the natural focal point for maximum effect.

If nothing else that would cure all the traffic arguments. :heyhey:
