I found my picture of the Ladder Bridge near St Thomas's Mill I took a year ago. (I got too many disks, I must organize !!)

This was the dreaded river crosser for the Kingston Cross Country run. It's still there as you can see .. but the river has gone !! It just goes over a fence now, a sort of super stile. :embarrass: (I think that's my pylon in the background.)

That was my route to the Prince and back - I keep intending to do it in the dark one night, to see if I still can find it.

I used to go over there frequently with my parents as a kid , to get to my grans on Tixall rd.

Tried to show hubby once where we used to go over the river , and couldn't find it. That explains it then .....they moved the river , and I hadn't just been imagining it was there afterall ! :D

The thing this thread has brought back to me is the market in the square, and the bus stops there too.

Plus the underground toilets. I am assuming they got filled in with concrete.

I remember those underground loos , and sitting on the bus stop railings in the square waiting for the bus.

The idea of an 'open' Market Square isn't new. This pix from my old Stafford Handbook shows the Market Square from more than a century ago. No flowerbeds, benches, bus stops or bogs.

It was turned into a car park between the wars and the fountain was removed for extra space in 1934 - the 'old square' as we think of it, was created for the coronation in the 50s.

The bandstand that is now in the Park was in the centre of the Square until 1908.

That pale car halfway down the front, towards the bus, could be a Jag Mk V..?

If so, then it's 1948 onwards.

Past Track has this picture, from a postcard with a 1952 postmark, but it could be from old stock, of course, if people were interested in recording the current state of the square before the flower beds were constructed.
