2019 General Election

An interesting law is being touted that all voters must carry photo ID when voting. I'd need to see details of this, but my initial reaction is that it is a Blow Job sinister move to stop some people voting (those being voters unlikely to tick his box.)

Did they mention when the law will apply from? If it's the next election, then ouch! Otherwise 5 years doesn't sound too unreasonable.

At the time, the suggestion here - https://www.quora.com/As-a-UK-citiz...you-dont-have-a-driving-license-or-a-passport - was that only passports or driving licenses would be acceptable. Presumably UK ID cards are now OK -https://www.validateuk.co.uk/

Either way, I suspect ensuring postal votes are filled-in in secret may be more worthy of the government's attention.

ETA If there were to be a second EU referendum, then the requirement to produce ID may work in Remain's favour as there's a strong correlation between the "estimated Leave vote" and "not owning a passport". And think of all those older women who leave all the driving to their husbands. http://www2.politicalbetting.com/in...-2nd-referendum-demand-strict-voter-photo-id/

The issue here is that people in poverty are a lot less likely to have ID (it costs a lot nowadays) so of course he's lessening his opposition votes.

And anyone who doesn’t manage the household finances. That includes young adults (less likely to vote blue) who may not have sufficient identification documents to get the photo ID

And I’m sure a lot of IDs will be conveniently slow to arrive in Labour voting constituencies.

Surely those young adults less likely to vote blue will still have their fake ID cards that they used to need to get a four pint jug in Spoons or replaced them with actual ID cards for the same purpose won't they?

We've resisted being forced to carry ID for many decades but I suspect, like the privatization of the NHS, it will come in through the back door.

Reds are countries where a National Identity card is compulsory
Yellows are some form of identity card is compulsory, e.g. National Identity card, passport or driving license
Greens are countries where identity cards are optional.

And tho the sheep met with the lemmings

And they lay down together

How loud they cried

But this was to be a timid cry

For whence the new day arrived

A scene so blinding no man nor beast

Survived

The Slithering Thing

Unless they bring something in that is inexpensive or free, no-one in our house will be able to vote. We can't afford to travel so no passports and we can't drive. I'm not forking out for passports we can't use and £68 for provisional driving licenses, if they are even acceptable, is a bit steep for again something that is of no use apart from being ID that we will only get to use on polling days.

Maybe they should encourage people to turn up at the polling station with their polling card, and if they've not brought it, then they have to provide some identification instead (passport, driving license or approved identity card).

Up to now, the polling card has said "You do not need to take this card with you to vote", which seems a bit pointless,

There is little need to send you one once you're established on the register otherwise...

It is a minefield I'll admit … we've probably all scoffed at Third World Countries and their election systems.

Can't help but think we should stop scoffing and watch OUR state VERY F****** CAREFULLY !!

It seems a nice, simple, cheap and somewhat elegant solution. Just scrub out the words "do not".

It would generally do, but it doesn't really confirm that the person turning up with it is the person named on the card.
True - you can't beat something with a photograph, especially if it's recent. But what if someone rocked up in a burqa?

ETA I wonder if there's any stats on how many people turn up to their voting station only to find that they'd already voted. I get the impression that the government are solving a problem that doesn't really exist. Trying to be too much like our EU cousins, methinks.
