2019 Christmas lights switch on were good. Very few fireworks this year, but that is to be expected with our cash strapped council. The cost for families on the mini fair rides was reasonable but only if you had one child, it would have worked out very costly at £2.00 and £2.50 per ride if you two or more children. The hook a duck stalls were a rip off - each stall charging £3.50 to hook a duck - the prize every time was a cheap cuddly toy. When I pointed out to the child I took into town that the hook a duck was too expensive if she wanted to go on the rides a very rude man on the duck stall said don't bother with the rides hook a duck instead and a another woman on the H a D stall told me it was worth it considering what they had to pay in rent. Wonder how much profit the council made out of the event.

They H&D stalls at the summer event held at Rowley Park. An absolute rip off to win a crappy toy worth pence to make. I wish the council would stop hiring these crappy stalls. Surely we deserve better.

Come on Council, for once, do more for your residents and provide a decent service rather than giving us s*it.

First rule of business: customers don’t give a shit about your costs. Some could do with learning that.

Have you seen some of the absolute ripoff merchants that come to the markets? Charging a fortune for doughnuts, milkshakes, etc. I always go to the “traditional” guy with the cart that parks near Maccy’s and charges reasonable amounts for a decent number of doughnuts, probably better too...

I'd be genuinely astonished if the council doesn't foot a bill of several thousand pounds for the event. I can't imagine what they get in rents on a dozen or so pitches covers the costs of fireworks/policing/crowd control/erecting a stage in the town square, even before you consider the costs of actually maintaining, erecting and running the lights themselves.

Didn't think it was as crowded this year as last time I went. Thought the pre switch on singers were a bit shite and if the two of the cast from this year's pantomime were representative of the general cast standard I'm glad I'm not going this year.
Despite that, there was a great atmosphere and thought the crowd control measures worked well apart from Gurlie's bf going to get coffees shortly before the switch on and not being allowed back into the square. Bad timing there I suppose.

I can confirm the hot doughnuts from the large stand outside H. Samuel on Saturday night's Xmas lights switch on, were delicious! It is a shame there is not a more permanent hot doughnut seller joining Mr Sizzle in the Market Square every day.

Getting back to the Christmas lights switch on, one stall was selling giant pandas for £20, no skill or luck involved to win them. Didn't see anyone dipping into their pockets to acquire one of these. I thought the singers after the switch-on were decent.

There's usually one on the Wednesday markets

And having walked though in quieter times yesterday and today the market square and the tree are looking very pretty indeed.

I checked the tree out last night walking home.

It's massive with a huge amount of lights. Very nice.
