2019 General Election

PeterD

ST16 Represent.
No literature or door knocked. For the best, a few years back a lovely old gentleman knocked at the door and the dozy sod I married ending up on the nomination sheet for a UKIP candidate.

Supposedly there was a hustings-like event yesterday, anyone go to it?
I'm not aware of anything in Stafford though I did scroll past what looked like an online debate in Stone yesterday (Bill Cash et al) but didn't stop to look. Probably on Facebook.

It was a small A4 sheet I saw in the Beaconside Cafe, I’ll see if it’s still up next time I’m there

On another note, travelling in election season is the worst. All you hear are people simultaneously using the words “Communist”, “Marxist”, and “Corbyn” while also complaining about the price of train tickets

Turkeys vote for Christmas at Christmas...

Got a leaflet through my door today promoting the 'Liberal Party.' No not Jo Swinson's mob, but, and I quote: 'The original party of David Penhaligan, Lloyd George and William E. Gladstone.'

MY BRAIN HURTS !!! :gonk::teef:

Enjoying a drop of red.

If it's the one I'm thinking of it was organised in the name of the eco-mentalist, climate-emergency mob, so I gave it a wide berth.

Having said that non of our candidates is in the least bit inspiring or even remotely local and I doubt anything they could say 'live' would change the extremely dim view I have of the lot of them.

OK, yar!

The Liberal party are the rump who didn't like the merger with the Soc Dems and stayed as an independent group. David Penhaligan threw me but apparently he was the Liberal MP for Truro in the 1970s & 80s.

Strange they didn't mention famous dog-lover Jeremy Thorpe instead.

I believe Churchill did a bit of flitting back and forth from the Tories to the Liberals and back again in his day. 'Crossing the floor' so to speak. This leaflet seems to be advocating some sort of devolution for Cornwall !!! … as if we need yet another layer of bureaucracy and government and jobs for the boys.

It also states: 'A bank in every town.' 'NHS dentist for every resident in every town.'
So at least half the population will have to become dentists ? Well I'm up for it, never look a gift horse in the mouth I say …. ARF ARF !! :buddy:

(Sorry … couldn't help myself on that one. ) :embarrass:

And I've had a few more today.

Firstly a Labour leaflet presumably pushed through the letterbox by one of Jeremy's little elves. And now the postman's delivered some more, all personally addressed - Labour leaflets for me and my daughter and a Tory one for my better half (what do they know?!??).

Still no sign of anything from the also-rans.

They are all also rans

And when the Tories win, and the real pain begins, it won't be you Conservative voters who will admit it's your fault for getting them a majority to destroy, no way, it'll be blame everyone and anyone and anything else, the immigrants, the unions, single parents, the sick, all those scroungers

Enjoy your victory people

Your time has come

Don't forget Europe, it'll all be their fault.

One labour leaflet hand delivered, one via royla mail to me, one conservative leaflet via royal mail to my wife. Unsure how this came about as we opted out of our details being available.

I'm going to be watching it from the East Coast, so I should know how bad it gets before bed time.

I remember watching the referendum and think - wait....wtf.

Easy, Tiger. Don't go tarring all us Conservative voters with the same brush. (I wouldn't, for example, dream of saying all Labour voters were anti-semitic racists, though it's obviously a bigger problem than they care to admit given that, over 3 years since the Chakrabati report, it's one they've still not solved or even look like solving. What chance of fixing the economy when Jezza can't even etc etc )

Yes, I accept my share of any fault, as indeed I did around this time last year while sat in my hospital bed thinking "Oh, why did I vote Tory? I'm sure that had I voted Labour my stay would have been more comfortable." Similarly when I ring my local clinic for an appointment and am told I'll have to wait a fortnight (!). "Deal with it, Tory - you voted for it." And I certainly wouldn't go blaming the groups you've listed. That's one for "Daily Mail readers" and, in the case of immigrants, those Leave voters in notionally Labour constituences, like in the Welsh valleys.

I go into most elections aware that there are trade-offs. I don't see us as "turkeys voting for Christmas" but more as losers on the swings but gainers on the roundabouts (but grumbling about those swings as we stand on the train on our daily commute). Hopefully I'll get to spend more time on the roundabouts than the swings.

Anyway, I don't see it as an automatic victory for the Tories. There's a week to go, and, as someone once said, a week's a long time in politics.

A week to go?

Nope

The postal vote is massive, and the postal voters are generally the old, and the old who actually vote are by a large majority, Conservatives

They've already voted . It's done

The new age is almost here

Triple self flagellation all round!!!
