I wash my own windows, and pay myself in strange compliments.

'Nice way of looking at your garden now' i might say, in a slightly sinister tone, to put myself off guard.

" by modern method of auction.. "

Anyone sold or purchased a property by this method

In England?

Ta
If this is some sort of approximation of what they do in Scotland, then it is a particularly shit way of doing things.

I know, like, isn't everything Scottish better because everyone there voted Remain?

No.

... through the gap in the columns at the pump, as I was filling the car with petrol, an LED advertising screen, by the entrance to the shop itself.

Nothing really exciting about that these days?

Agreed, to the point that I was hardly aware of it.

That was until it changed to another advert, which was a four feet high moving picture of a blazing open fire, which I spotted from the corner of my eye and was on the verge of running off when I realised it wasn't real.

I have nearly recovered...

I imagine that wouldn't go down too well in Oz right now … unless you wanted to be nailed to Ayers Rock.

Psst it's mostly Uluru now.
It's always been Uluru. It's just that the white invaders decided they would call it something else.

Bizarrely, in a similar context, I was recently identified as being in a location which has not used the name shown since it was officially returned to the real name in 1929, after things had calmed down a bit. The last time I heard that used in general conversation, rather than in a specific historical context, was in the mid-1970s. I wonder what map that are using?

Also, the only places that still use that name in general terms are in Australia...

Ha ha, amusingly, I see that it was International Migrants Day....

I know :) sadly some (like my parents) refuse to change it. They are only just getting the hang of Zimbabwe :roll:
It's surprising how quickly it fades away when people actually stop 'reinforcing' it by continued use.

For most towns in Ireland, particularly the smaller ones, English names are only used to confuse young people.

Imperial measurements are pretty much gone there now, the roads went fully metric about fifteen years ago and I recently found myself talking to a chap in his late 70s, who was having to convert my use of miles into kilometres, so that he could be sure of what I was saying...

I still convert my petrol 'litres' receipt to gallons so that I can see how many MPG the car has done. I still work in feet & inches and 0z & lbs . Went into a furniture shop a few months ago with son and I'd measured in inches. Young assistant hadn't got the foggiest idea how long an inch was ....same as me with cms ....

I'm generally happy to use multiple systems, but you do have to use them to keep them 'live'.

My car does report its consumption in MPG, based on gearbox rotations and fuel injector data - Imperial gallons in this one, but the previous one used US gallons, which caused me some concern until I realised that...

I do find that the winter is more Celsius and the summer is more Fahrenheit, though...

I have maintained my fluency in £sd - just in case - now waiting for Rees-Mogg to demand its return.

The 'thing' is that the inch is actually a metric unit - the old inch was restandardised in the late 1950s to be exactly 25.4 mm, when it used to be very slightly different.

Enjoying a drop of red.

That made me laugh.

As for Rees Mogg, he'll want a return to all the favourite of old. £sd, inches and yards, workhouses, black death etc.

To say nothing of re-introducing serfdom, burning witches and rebuilding the British Empire. (That last one could be a bit tricky.)
