Ah yes, it’s all coming back to me now - there was a dedicated petrol station built - which later became the Johnsons dry cleaners. The original Attwoods was on the site of the Eago showroom with pumps on the pavement. Back then - before Jet - it was National Benzole Mixture.

Used to wait for the bus there at Attwoods around that time...had to zoom in to make sure I wasn't on the photo

As soon as Attwoods was mentioned I remembered a yellow sign...must have been the Jet sign.

I also remember the pumps being somewhere by where the Johnsons canopy is now. Used to be another petrol station across the road that I filled up at as well.

Interesting to see on google maps the part in front of Johnsons , and the vets, hairdressers etc , which was always the main Lichfield Rd, is now marked as part of White Lion Street.

White lion street was always just the road up the side of the lockup , by where the 1hr parking is now.

The pumps for the other station were there for many years after it closed, still showing the "pre-oil-crisis" prices - 32p a gallon, I think.

People from out-of-town would often pull up there, just in case.

The famed Dave Lee Travis was one worthy of note....

Ahhh Rediffusion. The 'Black Box' on the window sill with just one knob, which turned between A, B, C, and D. I can remember as a kid listening to: 'Journey into Space,' and 'The Day of the Triffids' (best version ever on was on the radio, you literally crapped yourself every time you heard a rattling sound. The visualization was all in your head.)
I built a crystal radio as a kid and distinctly remember that if you wrapped the aerial around the Rediffusion wires that ran along the side of the houses in Sheridan Street, (yeah, cable entertainment isn't that new) I could get powerful signals from the Rediffusion signal … sadly there was a catch. You got all four stations simultaneously on top of each other … no tuning you see.
Called for a bit of earhole demodulation, but a simple bit of circuitry with coils you'd wound yourself !!! Didn't spoil the pleasure of hearing something. :heyhey:

I still have one of their leather key-fobs, although the silver print has worn off almost totally.

Wow - pick your feet up pop pickers, we appear to have strayed into Stafford Remembered, where we remember Stafford as it should be.

Stuck in the 70's...

Remember the 70's? Wasn't it so much better then, when Unionised work forces could still make unrealistic enough demands to destroy the whole idea of Unionism for the next several generations?

Groovy

Remember when you were a kid, you went out all day on traffic free roads, but as an adult you got sucked in to the dream of owning your own car, so the roads are now completely covered in cars to the point where you are worried about your own kids playing on them whilst simultaneously lambasting them for not 'playing out' like you did when the 70's was absolutely brilliant and why can't it be like that now?

Remember when there were jobs? Close enough so you could walk to them.

Wake Up! They aren't there any more!

Is anybody home!?!

You've f***ed it for your Grandkids, their world will be horrid.

But let's Remember Stafford, shall we?

OK Boomers...

Toilet paper...

Look deep into your soul...

Would you rather wipe your arse in the 70's, or the 2020's?

* cushioned paper luxuriousness *

I’m aware I’m ignoring the metaphor you’re making here but - ‘Bronco’ brand toilet paper in the 1950’s felt quite harsh - not much better than newsprint. So, yes wiping one’s arse was a much more comfortable experience post 1960.

There is some Bromo at Blist's Hill. Maybe they would let you have a go with it, for old time's sake?

Izal was still around into the mid-60s, but fairly rare and pretty much totally gone by 1970. MoD establishments carried on for a while into the very early 70s, with their special edition stuff, with "Government Property" printed on every sheet to protect us from Soviet invasion. I think they may just have been using up stocks.

Izal was in the loos at MRI / GEC Measurements for many years while I was there. Used to take my own loo paper from home.

I don't recall being obliged to use 'tinfoil' since 1972 and that did seem a very 'retro' event at the time.

I left the country in 1968, returning in 1971 - in that time an almost complete change had occurred in flushing arrangements - almost all the high-level, chain-pull cisterns had been replaced by low level ones with handles.

I don't think I have 'pulled the chain' this century. The last time would have been around 1998, when the Wildlife Trust were still at Sandon.

I was still pulling the chain in Mother-in-laws house up until 2009 when she died. She had the high tank with chain (and sometimes finding no chain resulted in standing on the seat to reach the lever) , and Izal would have been most welcomed on some visits when she didn't have any paper at all ! Sometimes you'd be lucky enough to find newspaper in there instead . Visiting hubbys relatives in that rough area has also been a similar experience . :o

Chap with his puppy on its first trip into town. Telling everyone it was a half coeliac - although he did think that might not be quite right. Worked out that it was half Sealyham. Lovely dog though.

Maybe it was half coelocanth?
