Leave or Remain?

As I understand it that got pretty hairy. I sailed with an ex RN guy who was aboard the frigate HMS Diomede when she got rammed. As you can see from this pix she took quite a bit of damage, somebody could easily have been killed. Apparently the Old Man ordered the 20mm guns uncovered and told the skipper of the Icelandic vessel he'd rake it from stem to stern if that behaviour didn't stop.
I think the crew would have been with him because the damage extended to the beer store …. :eek:

The Fishfinger Song
(Miles Whooton)

Come all ye jolly sail-i-ers, who sail across the sea;
And listen to this story I'm about to tell to thee.
Concerning them bold Fish-iar lads who sail the seas so wet;
A-hunting for fish fingers, with a harpoon and a net.

'Twas in the year of '64,or was it' 63-
We set sail from Basingstoke , bound for Amer-i-key.
The storms they was a-ra-ji-ing, and the waves a dreadful sight;
It took us forty days, me boys, to reach the Isle of Wight.

Our Captain's name was Gladys, he wore a dress of red;
Which might have been the reason he was not marr-i-ed.
He was a gay old sea-bitch and it was his fav-our-ite joy,
To take a turn around the deck with the handsome cabin boy.

And then off Iceland's icy shores, a mighty shoal we spied;
Of Froz-i-en Fish Fin-gi-ers, a-waiting to be fried.
With our harpoons at the ready my boys, upon that shoal we burst;
A-las, we was too late me lads, the Japanese had got there first.

Them Nippon lads came at we, they was a terrible crew;
A-brandishing tran-sis-ti-ers, and a-giving it the old Kung-Fu.
We sang them a sea shan-ti-ee, but they did not want to know;
And they slashed away our mizzen mast with one Karate blow.

We got back to old Eng-gi-land in a twelve month and a day;
It would have been much quicker, but we went the pretty way.
Take warning all ye sail-i-or lads what sails the sea in ships

Don't ever go fish fing-i-ering, just stick to Cod and Chips

I can remember sailing through a Russian fishing fleet off the Western Approaches. We were doing about 14 knots and it took us four hours to get through it, so covered an area of at least 60 miles in diameter. At the centre was a huge factory ship, which I noticed had a very high transmission mast. I went down to the bar and put the TV on and sure enough, there were Russian television programmes being broadcasted for the benefit of the fleet.
They must have been literally hoovering the fish out of the sea !!!

The more interesting thing about the UK fishing farago, quite apart from the shocking revelation that Brexit MEP's are completely clueless, is that there are two immutable truths about the fishing rights to UK waters -
  1. 'we' don't eat what is fished from our waters
  2. 'they' do
'We' eat what is fished off the coast of Iceland and up towards Norway

'They' buy all the bits 'n' bobs that 'we' couldn't even name.

Cod 'n' Haddock are not what is found off John 'O' Groats or Land's End.

I'd be interested to hear from @BobClay what the 'rules of engagement' might be if 'we' suddenly needed to redeploy RN vessels to protect our fishing 'interests' around the Blighty coast?

Had this discussion a few days ago with possiblyMrsMonkey, apparently the cod wars are much better known about over there. We're rather ignorant about the whole thing, which plays into brexiteers hands nicely.

* proper intrigued with the whole 'possiblyMrsMonkey' thing though *

She has been upgraded to currentMrsMonkey :D
She's also one of those filthy immigrants that has come over to steal our jobs while claiming all the benefits, and I'm pretty sure it's her fault the NHS is on its knees. There could be a few interesting conversations coming up with some of my family that voted leave :strange:

Mrs p, who hails from abroad, once had a note to that effect placed under her wiper when parked outside her shop in Nantwich. Ironic considering she employs 25 people now in one place or another now.
