On behalf of the husband!

He has a number of old tools inherited from his grandad and the wooden handles have dried out over time.

Quite a few hammers have very wobbly heads that could fly off at any moment!

They have already been 'wedged' where a metal splint has been added so looking for another solution!

Would soaking in oil work?

Suggestions welcome!

Yes, if the wobbliness is (very) small.

My normal practice is to let a handle dry for a few days before fitting it, then 'rehydrating' it when it's been fitted tightly whilst dry.

A much better bet, in your case, would be to apply some new wedges to tighten it before oiling it.

Or to fit new handles altogether...
