Green Man, Hixon

I am hearing rumours, and no more than rumours, that the Co-op are trying to purchase the Green Man in Hixon, has anyone heard anything? The Co-op built a store on the car park of the Royal Oak at Kings Bromley and kept the pub open but in other cases they have converted or demolished the pub.

I was told from a very reliable source at the weekend that the deal has fallen through.
The pub is for sale though they're trying to keep it as a pub. It's a shame more locals don't use the only locally run pub/restaurant in the village. It seems most would rather pay the inflated prices over the road. They'll probably be complaining when the Green Man closes. A real shame for a landlord who's done a lot of charity work for the village over the past 30ish years.

There is now a planning application to demolish the pub and build a retail unit and three houses on the site. The application is in the name of the developers, Thistlewood Properties but the retail unit is for the Co-op.

Does anyone know the history of the pub? The current building looks sort of 1920s late Arts & Crafts (ish).

The planning application, and opportunity to comment on it is at -

There's a campaign to save the pub, possibly the village buying it as a community pub.
A bit ironic really when you consider how few of the locals have actually supported the business over the years.
Let's hope it can be saved in some form or other.

I'm assuming that the Green Man closed in December, all mention of it seems to have vanished.
