"There were caged birds of all kinds in the market. They were given seed, millet, water and cuttlefish bone for their beaks. Their claws were kept trimmed and they were safe from all birds of prey.
But it was the birds in the trees that were singing."

Len Deighton, 'An Expensive Place to Die.'

You remind me of a time I was on a course in Southampton in 1975. We were doing a pub crawl in Shirley which had a bit of a reputation at the time. I think beer was about 35p a pint at that time (7 bob in old money which seemed pricey to us on the day.) I read in a paper that the breweries were insisting it needed to go up to 50p a pint (ten bob !!!) in order make it a viable product. I turned to the other lads and said: "The day it goes up to ten bob a pint, is the day I stop drinking."

No ... I don't know what planet I was on either ....

Just sumat to think about.............

Dear teachers,
Next week, when those sweet faces show up in your classroom for the first time and you want to give that familiar homework of "What I did this summer!!" , please consider the kid whose family couldn't afford a holiday ☹️ the kid who took care of younger siblings because their grown-up slept all day the kid who hid under the covers at 2 a.m. trying to escape the screaming and cursing the kid who is looking forward to lunch because they've only had the same sandwich all summer or haven't been fed at all and have spent their Summer looking for ways to feed themselves., the kid wearing last year's clothes because their family couldn't afford new ones .
There are kids dreading the first day of school because they have no good answer for what they did this summer when what they really did was just survive.
So please consider a different question. Perhaps "what I'm looking forward to about this school year," . But please, don't make them go around the room or write a paragraph telling about their summer. Sadly, for a lot of kids, the best part is that summer is over.

But beyond that drive, it gets pretty BIG ...
