Defending the Floodplain.

We've just had these through the letterbox... Odd there's no mention of traffic issues or potential flooding....

Trying to be factual, I still don't get this argument over excessive traffic. A site that used to house over 1000 employees having even 300 or 400 homes shouldn't create anything worse than it did.
Now flooding - that's a different matter! I'm pretty sure the land and types of drains will be different to that of an industrial area with big drains that took water from all the roof areas and roadways. Then you have wildlife. If you worked long hours like i did on that site you saw all sorts when it was quiet. I'm sure most of that will be displaced.

I went past the other day and they seem to have raised the level by quite a bit from what it used to be when I was there.

The poor design of water management in modern housing estates is exasperating the flooding situation in Stafford/Staffordshire.
We need to see more Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) incorporated into designs to prevent what has Eccleshall has experienced over the last few days. The water in these pictures is surface run off which is heading into the Sow.

Staffordshire wildlife trust.... ^^

I assume the houses near me that will be built will have this same thing, which will make matters worse around the area/river, also the developments on lichfield road etc.

How long until something gets done or they take it seriously?

It should be one of theos main concerns, not that she's bothered

I hate the fact they're bulding new houses on old GE/ALSTOM site was always going to happen I guess, but the fact st leonards has no drives and cars parked eitherside makes it pretty much a one way street, add this traffic onto that too... also local nature (canal route nearby) will take a hammering with more people using it / houses closer, (it already is with lockdown, much like the chase)

In reply to @kyoto49’s post in a different thread I’ve just driven along Fairway and the flooding on the old Measurements site looks to be where they may have excavated some ground.

The site looks to be raised a few feet above the current flood plain so I think the housing will be ok for at least 12 months until global warming raises the water levels even further.

This was taken on the river side of Measurements and the ground rises just past the tree line.

I have never understood why developers can get away with building shoddy shit houses with absolutely no requirement to fund proper improvement of infrastructure incl flood mitigation. With all the new houses currently being built in Stafford the planners should have enforced proper recreational spaces, football and rugby pitches etc, proper cycling infrastructure, segregated cycle paths, and proper flood mitigations in exchange for planning permission. Other towns seem to manage this.

Vin Garbutt's song 'Black Poplar' sums it up neatly, with these lyrics about the floodplain:

But with pride and with disdain disregarding future pain,
In a manner most insane we build homes upon your plain,
Time and time again we invaded nature's drain,
Just to suffer when the waters rise again.

Yes, Black Poplars Matter.
I saw Vin many times over the years, and appropriately he had been booked at the Floodgate.

From January, 2015.

It does look like the rather nice poplar in Lidl's car-park might also be in some danger of 'improvement'.

The drilling rig was in the bowling alley car-park until today, having moved over the river from Sainsbury's at some point recently.

As expected, it suffered from 'improvement'.

That's a lot of piano keys there...

Ironically, we've actually lost a rugby field and green land due to houses and a retirement village being build in castlefields, ok I'm aware they've just technically moved the rugby club. But still, hardly fair on residents who liked the green area.

It's a shame new houses are getting smaller and smaller with no gardens.

I was listening to a programme yesterday that said having a garden now adds more value onto your property than it ever did .

That was one of my many issues with the new rugby club. The public lost a large green space that was open to all surrounded with mature trees and hedgerows. The new rugby club is most definitely NOT open to all judging by the massive ugly security fence around it :(

I've yet to find anyone who has bought one of these new poorly built rabbit hutches?
