Looks like they haven't touched the slabs because a complete remodeling of the town centre may be in the pipework.
These signs have popped up along with a website, asking you to "shape the future" of the space.
I believe they were lucky enough to get a big grant either last year or this year, so this could be part of it.

Stafford’s Market Square vision unveiled
Councillors in Stafford Borough were given a glimpse of proposals to improve the town’s Market Square at a meeting last night (Tuesday 9th).
Members of the Borough Council’s Economic Development and Planning Scrutiny Committee were shown an image (above) of how the ‘Square’ could look – as part of a larger project for the north of the town centre backed by a government regeneration fund.
The committee were discussing a report on the Future High Street Fund (FHSF) - with the Borough Council awarded a provisional £14.3 million for schemes to improve the north end of the town.
The meeting heard that any money from the Borough Council’s successful bid for funding had to be spent on specific projects detailed in their application.
The council was now working with partners, including Staffordshire County Council, to put together final proposals to submit to the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government.
A report to the committee stated “FHSF capital will not fund short-term, surface-level projects that only make a difference to the appearance, rather than the use of the area.”
Councillor Frances Beatty, Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Planning, said: “One of our aims is to make the Market Square an attractive meeting place where cultural and sporting activities can take place as well as specialist markets to attract local people and residents to the heart of the town centre.”
The report continued: “The projects put forward deliver a range of development within the Northern Town Centre area including commercial, food and beverage, residential and public realm improvements. Any award is therefore ringfenced to deliver these projects.”
A final funding award will be announced in March and an update on progress will be brought before the Scrutiny Committee at a later date.

Shouldn't have took central funding for a new paving to be laid down, also, although unsightly, who cares about the trip hazard path, I hope they're not spending all the money on this , they need to revitalise the town as a whole now.

It’s being re-laid with the new ‘Smart Tarmac’ and will feature fun zig-zag optical illusion graphics - though these have to be viewed from above via a drone cam.
