Nostalgia - What are your memories of Stafford?

Yeah I remember visiting Vale Onslows with 'Dos' Kite (he's on the left in the Uttoxeter pix with the unconventional dress.) Dos wanted some bits and they made a right hash of serving him until he went bonkers (he was a plumber.) He used to race a Commando in production races at Darley Moor.
Sadly he's no longer with us ... but his funeral piss up in the Eagle pub I'm still recovering from.

If Vale Onslows didn't send him bonkers the Norton isolastic mounts would.
Legend had it that the police commandos didn't handle because if the isolastic bushes were tight the vibrations rattled the radios to bits so they were set with greater clearances making the bikes handle like a jelly on casters.

With mention of the Market moving I dug out this pix of the current position, albeit more than a century before. The Wesley Church from my old Handbook of Stafford. Only the tower was left ... who knows what its future might be ?

You see that's the trouble with Stafford ... there just aren't any shops where you can get some decent 'Hose' anymore. :P

An advert from my old Stafford Handbook published in 1906 (price Sixpence.) As near as I can tell this building was roughly where Boots is now. The shelf in the upper left corner is where the HSBC Bank is now, although it would have been Brookfields shop back then.

I fixed a washing machine in Prague for a friend's sister - the sister's English was very good, but it was American English.

I was confident that the machine would now work, if it had a water supply, but the flexible pipe to connect to the supply pipe was not available.

I said to her "This should work now, all you need to do is put the hose in behind it"

This was met with a 'funny look' and a dictionary was produced - her interpretation of my statement was that she should stuff some socks behind the machine - possibly in an effort to reduce vibrational effects..?

I believe that the original canvas water hoses were made on the same machinery that made 'hose', in the clothing sense, hence the term being used for flexible fluid piping.

i knew an old boy, born in 1916, who still referred to socks as 'hose' up to 2015...

As a dweller in the colonies now I do also find myself wondering about the pants they sold.

Underpants in English certainly suggest that (over)pants exist and was a word in circulation

When I first started wearing tights in my later school years in early 70's , we knew them as panti-hose.

I remember a clothing shop (or selling something like materials.....I was only a kid then so memory vague ) where the old Thomas Cook / Hays Travel shop was/is , (facing the EE shop.) Can't remember the name of it though???

Was it Jeffs ? They used to have one of those pneumatic tube systems for sending / receiving receipts and cash to and fro from the accounts dept.

Enjoying a drop of red.
I can remember making myself ill in there a few times, most notably on one occasion with a couple of pints of snakebite. You may be relieved to hear I do not have any pictorial evidence of the occasion.

First 'wine bar' I ever went to. Felt well cool ordering a bottle of Matteus Rose and two glasses to impress some bird.
Youth eh?

A Friend of a Friend is asking if anyone has pictures of Propps Nightclub (now Essence of the Orient)

Hopefully there will be no incriminating evidence unearthed through your friend's search!!!!

Fortunately I don't think I've got any photos but those days were a little hazy so I may have some somewhere :)
