Whilst awaiting a call on my work phone I received a call on my own phone from Phonehouse and a chappy with a very strong Asian accent was adamant that I wouldn't refuse the fantastic offer he had for me. I immediately responded that I wasn't interested but he was very persistent and just carried on regardless.

I told him another three times that I really wasn't interested and then politely hung up.

A few minutes later he called back again saying he had an even better offer than the one he hadn't even told me about.

I gave up and played along for a while giving stupid answers to his questions and he eventually offered me a 2020 Motorola Edge 5G phone so I asked him whether that was the 5G phone that started all this COVID crisis.

The call progressed with him telling me all about how the phone was built in a COVID secure factory, how often the factory staff were tested, how the packaging company were COVID secure and so on.

He eventually hung up when I asked him how often Phonehouse would test my new phone to make sure it wasn't spreading COVID.

It passed a few minutes whilst I was waiting for my other call, at least :)

You have infinitely more patience than me. I usually shout down the phone these days the two Anglo-Saxon words that equate to 'Go Forth and Multiply.'

I do this the moment I hear the accent. This disturbs me in a way because it is a form of racism, and I don't consider myself a racist. But after so many calls from con men and spivs and crooks in general you start to reach your limit. I've lost count of the numbers I've blocked, but I suspect the phone can't handle a country with a population of more than one billion.

Perhaps the government over there should stop pissing on the farmers and go after the criminals instead.

You think you hear the accent but then from the quintessentially English first name they give you realise you're mistaken so it can't be a form of racism !

I treat all the same, apparent nationality doesnt bother me or an anglicised name to assist us british. I understand and appreciate that we are a global and multicultural society. I listen and respond, politely as it may be that its an important call. Its at the point where BT Openreach are going to cut me off, when I am a Virgin customer, who worked for BT for 10 years. Thats when politeness goes out the window as thats the point they demonstrate that they are looking to part me and my money via nefarious methods.

I can't remember the last time a call from an unknown number was someone I actually wanted to hear from, but I never answer them regardless. If real they'll leave a message, which I may listen to eventually.

Not had any of these calls in a while. I assume its because people have had so little interaction that they chat their ears off!

I’ve had legit calls from people with non-British accents so I always wait until it’s clear it’s a scam.

I remember a woman on the phone with me once claiming she was from my internet provider and I involuntarily chuckled at something she said so she asked why I was laughing. I said because I know what she’s doing. She then said “oh yeah, what do you know, huh, you know nothing. Know this, you will go to hell and you will die” and then hung up.

BT’s customer service really isn’t what it used to be!

Btw if anyone is interested, the troubled podcast ‘Reply All’ did a great two part story around episodes 101 and 102 where the presenters where getting these kinds of scam calls and they managed to actually track down who was behind them and even travelled to India to meet them personally. It’s quite something.

I've started answering mine since the GP surgery call about my jab was a 'private number' . Still waiting for a call off them for my 2nd jab , so don't want to miss it.
Last one I had was carphone warehouse the other day. Didn't let her carry on long enough to find out what she was trying to flog me.

Son used to have a sports whistle when he worked as a lunchtime supervisor whilst in 6th form. He left it here when he went off to uni, so it came in handy with persistent nuisance callers on my landline. Backfired one day though after giving a piercing blast of it down the phone . Last I heard on the line was"What the F**k !!!! " . But then they kept ringing my landline constantly all day , every day , until I had to have our number changed.

Had another lovely stroll over the chase again this morning. Saw some Long Horn cattle , from the Shugborough estate , grazing over there as well . Apparently they are keeping the meadow growth under control in an area designated for butterfly conservation (or something like that)

Have they not thought of pretending to be the GP surgery and needing your bank account details before giving details of your second jab ?
Not too far fetched giving how the Tories are privatising the NHS !

Pretty much. There are scams where they pretend to book your appointment and then ask for payment. Staffs Police and South Staffs Council have put out warnings about them.

Inevitable really but I hadn't heard of it.

To wake up in the morning and be told “You’re a fu**ing disgrace” was quite shocking and very upsetting, and obviously very personal to me.
In fairness, that wasn't aimed at you personally, it was aimed more generally, and generalisations don't allow for nuance.

I appreciate that doesn't really make it any better, and i agree that i was ott, so i owe you an apology.

In my defence it really pisses me off when i see that term being used pejoratively - what are we attacking here? We're talking about a mindset that seeks to be 'awake' to the possibilities that our words and actions can serve to exclude the already marginalised in our society. It is typical of the dark and fetid heart of conservatism to portray this impulse as some sort of weakness worthy of nothing but scorn. When i see lazy platitudes like 'woke brigade', all i hear is the subtext that underlies it - essentially a lamentation that you miss being able to be openly racist/homophobic/ableist etc, just like you could in the 'good' old days.

I am absolutely not saying that's what you mean by it @Carole , just an explanation of why it winds me up. An explanation but not an excuse - i was out of order, and i am sorry.

Just been looking through hubbys details whilst ordering his repeat prescriptions online. 'Past appointments' suddenly has a new one appearing , showing he had a face to face baby immunisation consultation with them last July :o . (Off to check the calendar now to see what he was doing on that date ...... :strange: )

And since I last checked mine after my covid jab , a message saying they had sent me a text invite beforehand (deffo not received) yet that message wasn't on my records right up until last week when I last looked . :hmm: Strange things going on...
