What are we watching on TV?

Just finished watching the last episode of the first series of a 20 year old US cop series called 'The Shield.' Have to say I was impressed. I'll give you a synopsis without any spoilers: good cops, bad cops, good cops with a bit of bad in them, bad cops with a bit of good in them.

It reminds me of a cop series from decades ago called 'Hill Street Blues,' upgraded somewhat to more gritty dark drama. It's unpredictable and the writing and acting is top grade.

I got a few more series to watch. I'm of an age where 20 years seems almost like yesterday. (The millennium bug ? The twin towers ?) It's still good television though.

Just finished all the seasons of Banshee. Utterly off the wall whacked out police thriller.

It's a roller coaster ride from start to finish .... !!! (I produced a synopsis in an earlier post, it doesn't do it justice ...)

Been hearing a lot lately about an upcoming BBC murder thriller series called 'Vigil.' Apparently the murder takes place aboard a Vanguard class nuclear powered submarine and a lady detective is dropped onboard via helicopter to investigate.

Vanguard class subs are Trident submarines. (Think ... end of the world if they're called to action.)

From the same production company as Line of Duty and Bodyguard. Although I think all submariners are mad bastards, I've always been fascinated by these boats.

Sometime in the Autumn for broadcast, but there seems to be a lot of secrecy about it. I'll be there with my TV remote for sure ....

There was a murder on nuclear sub ten years ago - but it was tied up in Southampton at the time and the detection process was fairly short.

Yes I remember that. Astute class Attack Subs. Deadly bloody things. Follow on from the Churchill Class attack subs one of which literally swept the Argentine Navy from the sea back in 1982.

Astute Class Sub. (Note no actual figures are given for their performance.)

No wonder those guys are all mad if all they eat is Weetabix and sausages.

The Vanguard class are a lot larger. Pretty much Armageddon warships. Fail safe or Dr Strangelove vessels.

Can't help but think a good backdrop for a murder mystery, especially when on patrol.

It's always struck me as odd that nobody with any of these flashy submarines was able to detect the deliberate beeping from the MH370 'black box' over the month that the power should have lasted.

Or they didn't bother.

Or they did, but don't want to admit that they located it - or didn't.

I suppose it depends on where the aircraft went down exactly. The strategic subs will only be in the waters inside the range of their missiles. I sailed with a Chief Officer once who was an ex RN officer on Polaris strategic subs. I asked him whereabouts he patrolled and he replied that that was still classified. But, he added, if you take the range of a Polaris as between 2 and 3 thousand miles, and draw a circle of that radius centred on Moscow on your world map, we were in the 'wet' bits.

Tridents are more like 6.000 mile range - pretty much a whole hemisphere to fire them from - and there will be areas of interest east of Moscow.

The first episode of a new series: The Equaliser. This time with Queen Latifah as Robyn McCall. I like her, but the episode seemed a bit too slick and formula for my taste. I liked Denzel Washington in the recent films, but for me The Equaliser will always be Edward Woodward. His version had a darker edge to it, perhaps a left over from his job as Security Services heavy in Callan, which took a very dark approach to that world. (Many on here might not remember Callan, I would dearly like to watch those series, and the spin off film again.)

I think Million Dollar Baby is a true classic. He not only starred in in it, directed it .. but wrote the music soundtrack as well. (You will need a hanky to watch it.)
