As a language pedant I can only support dirtybobby completely and utterly. It is outrageous that people no longer speak properly.

Here is a quick guide for the grammatically challenged -

If you can count them - there are fewer. If they are not countable - there is less.

So - one may have less sugar, but one may only have fewer grains of sugar - geddit?!

I agree, although people on the forum probably tend to write as they speak, which is furry muff.

In general though, I think people's increasing apathy towards writing proper [sic] is appalling. Part of my job is to proof read, and to some extent edit, content sent to me by policy teams to go on the Defra website. The stupid, basic mistakes civil servants, of all people, make are unbelievable.

Oh, jimbob, that sounds like a toughy. At least the stuff you have to proof read is supposed to be proper English, I have done quite a of translating and proof reading, mainly copy from the art, culture and media sectors - OMG - the rules have gone out the window and everyone thinks that's cool. I am actually firmly convinced that it has gone past a point of no return and we might as well set up a colony on an island for the few of us who still appreciate decent English.

"The Knot Unties"

Properties of a good knot:-
- Easy to tie
- Easy to untie
- Doesn't weaken the rope
- Doesn't slip
- Fit for purpose

Unfortunately the Staffordshire Knot doesn't really meet the above criteria, and particularly the last one, not really very good for hanging three people at once* if you don't believe me give it a try!

* controversial suggestion for the origin of the Knot! http://www.bbc.co.uk/stoke/content/articles/2005/08/09/stafford_knot_feature.shtml

I thought the Stafford motto was "Cyclists dismount" - I see it everywhere I go.
Or maybe "Speed cameras kill"? Something like that anyway, hard to read at that speed.

Don't wish to shock you all but you can totally blame the teachers for this one. It is no longer teaching policy to correct written grammar or spelling unless it is for english language lessons . Equally disturbing is that kids no longer get penalised for poor grammar and spelling in examinations either . It seems that kids get offended by being corrected about how they communicate and it "disrespects" them in some way ? ???

Soo glad I'm out of that game !

In the Oxfam shop recently was a Staffordshire County Council tourism publication, basically just some brochures bound together inside a leatherette cover with the following slogan gold-blocked on the front ...

Staffordshire - a great place to visit.

Well, it amused me. But it does rather depend on the tone in which you say it.

What about "staffordshire - prepare to get knotted"

Again it depends on your delivery of the motto as to the sentiment.....lol

I am told that the signs on the outskirts of Stone used to say "canal town", but somebody kept peeling the "c"s off.
