Hi there

Just wondering if anyone can give me any tips on good areas to live in Stafford (and areas to avoid), good schools - primary and secondary? Thanks!

Stafford has mixed housing in most areas - but on the edge of town Hillcroft Park/Walton on the Hill/Wildwood/Baswich has relatively more modern stock and a generally good standard

Out of town Eccleshall - seven miles

In town - Castlefields estate - off Redgrave Drive looking good - but all this does rather depend on your budget if you are buying, perhaps you can give us an idea of price and type and you may get a more comprehensive answer?

We live in Trinity Fields (north side of Stafford near Junction 14) and we love it.... and our house is for sale if you want it!

In all seriousness, I like the area, quiet, well kept, close enough to everything, good bus route right down the street.

All I'll say is that Stafford has got some very nice people.... plus some idiots as have most places. And even in the better area's there are usually still some idiots. In general though it's not a bad town to live in. Many of us at some point have left Stafford but then returned to our roots again so it can't be all that bad. ;)

Hi alimay68, welcome to Stafford Forum. :)

When you say "possible" relocation to Stafford, how likely is it that you will actually take the plunge? Am I right in thinking you currently live down under?

I do think Stafford has some sort of magnetic field; I was all set to go and live in Aus after being there for 3 months, but as soon as I got back I got stuck! As for areas; having moved to a less salubrious part oft own (according to Basil), I agree that every area has its idiot. There's a couple of estates (or roads within estates) to avoid, but generally it is what you make it.

welcome, alimay! get yer sen to stafford, you won't regret it :D

as for my personal area recommendations: castletown and castlefields.. if you want something a bit more out of town (i.e. more detached houses, bigger gardens, etc.) walton and wildwood are nice, and if you're of a slightly older persuasion then baswich/weeping cross is where all the cool OAPs hang out ;)

As for schools Walton High's catchment area is quite a priority for some therefore property prices a slighttly inflated around Walton-Baswich-Wildwood-Weeping Cross environs. As a relocator i'd suggest a wish list of your requirements would help your endeavour, as we came from SE London car-parking was high on our wanted list. i'd guess that primary school is required, now there are 4 RC junior schools in the town and by attending one of these a place at Blessed William Howard is assured. After Walton it's probably the next best performing school. Are you going to work in the town or commute if the latter then a place within a comfortable walking distance of the railway station might be handy, also you'd then be within staggering distance of the towns hostelrys etc. Hope this is of use to you and if i can be of further assistance just ask......

Castletown is good.
I feel that is a very modest and controlled appraisal of our area and would personally go as far as saying Castletown is very good.

Oooh, thanks everyone ... I've been in Oz for 12 years, but I'm actually from Leek originally, though I used to have German lessons with a lovely lady on the Parkside estate and worked at Schott Glass for 3 weeks in the 90s (are they still there?). So..... would like to be closer to family, but also somewhere a bit different with good infrastructure (ie close to motorway), a safe environment to bring up kids, neutral accent, close to the countryside for walks/bike rides, good supermarkets (Tescos and/or Aldi)....

I will have to look up Castletown, which a few of you have mentioned, as I've generally been researching around Walton on the Hill. I like the look of Walton Hill High School and also Barnfields Primary School. Has anyone got any thoughts on these two schools? The Ofsted Reports I've read (albeit a few years' old) aren't exactly outstanding; more good-satisfactory. I'm concerned for our son who turns 11 in October, who would be commencing Yr 7 in September next year and I think he would be overwhelmed by a huge high school. He's quite small for his age, coupled with being the 'new kid on the block' with a different accent and no familiar friends, he'd be susceptible to bullying.

As for our housing budget, I'd say we might have to rent for a while, but would be looking for a 4-bed or 3-bed + study with a garden (conservatory/utility would be a bonus)! An older type house would be the go (ie, not a new-build).

It's a big wish list ... but then, we're making a big move and our kids' well-being is of utmost priority ...

Any more thoughts and tips, please let me know. Thanks!
