Must-Eat places in Stafford

Hi

I am new to the Stafford area, living near the Shopping centre.

I love food, and would like to know where to eat in and around the Stafford and surrounding areas. I have seen a few threads here, but would like some more ideas:

(1) What are the must-eat places?

(2) What are the best bang-for-your-buck places (on a budet)?

(3) What is the best if you are not on a budget?

(4) Where is nice to just sit and have a coffee and a snack/cake etc?

(5) Best Take-Away?

here's a couple off the top of my head
2: apres, the pie & ale
3: the dog and doublet sandon
4: the soup kitchen, the bank house

5) Spice Delight for Indian.

Everywhere has reviews on the forum, but everything depends entirely on tastes. I hate some places others love, and vise versa. Without some personal imput its hard to say what you'd like, you'd just get the equivalent of a brief newspaper article on the town centre. What sort of food are you interested in?

Pie and Ale (Crabbery Street)

The Wildwood Pub (Wildwood), The Radford Carvery (Radford Bank), & The Yard (Riverside, Newport Road)

(3) What is the best if you are not on a budget?
The Swan (Greengate Street)

(4) Where is nice to just sit and have a coffee and a snack/cake etc?
The Soup Kitchen (Church Lane)

(5) Best Take-Away?
New Garden Cantonese Takeaway (Penkridge)

1. Malabar Indian Restaurant everytime for me
Vivere Italian was good though as well.

3. Panache Indian on Stone Road, expensive but great food and service.

Hey Kyoto, have you tried Karma II? I also love Malabar, enjoyed Panache although the GF found it a bit greasy, but both loved Karma. There is a thread about it somewhere.

1. Pie and ale, the sun, Ashiana
2. Pastiche, Radford Bank carvery, The yard
3.Malabar, the swan
4. Soup Kitchen, Pie and ale
5. For Indian Abduls - although I know some people on here dont agree!! For chinese dont really mind anywhere except Essence of the orient which I will never use again after finding loads of long black hair in my spare ribs once!

For Indian food, Karma II is a must, and for a relatively low budget meal, Pastiche is very hood- it changes its menu every months

I agree with most of the places that other people have said. I particularly like Pastiche for it's ever changing menu at reasonable prices. I still think that Spice Island is the best Indian in Stafford for variety of flavours. Malabar would come a close second but is expensive. Tiger Bowl does a decent Chinese takeaway, although you will have to go to Oriental Garden in Stone for a more authentic experience. The must eat place for me would be the Royal Bangkok which does superb Thai food.

Mrs King makes a fantastic Ramen but you will have to wait for Come Dine With Me to visit Stafford for that.

Mr Sizzle, Greggs, McGregor

(3) What is the best if you are not on a budget?
No 5, Weston Hall, Moat House.

(4) Where is nice to just sit and have a coffee and a snack/cake etc?
Soup Kitchen, The Swan

(5) Best Take-Away?
Chinese: Good View. Indian: Spice Island. Pizza: Dominos

Generalisation warning


Stafford people who have not lived elsewhere do not understand good food

There are no must places to eat in the town because Stafford is a two for fiver town

A typical Stafford meal out is the cheapest thing on the menu and spend twice as much getting hammered

The Hand and Cleaver at Ranton - 9 minutes by van from Doxey - comes closest tosatisfying the brief but even they have had adjust thier varied menu to cater for the blandness of the borough..

The curry house in mill bank is pleasant enough and the bank house cafe has a fair clientel lynchtimes..

The Swan mafia would have u believe they produce good food - they don't

Good food and Staffordshire are not words generally put together unless its a local tourist board promo... there are exceptions of course but a handful in a county of a mulluon people isnt something to brag about

Further afield the hundred house at norton in salop is wirth a trip, on the other end of the scale try the gt western in wolverhampton for grey peas and bathams

I have only scan read this but I don't think anyone has mentioned the chinese buffet, which I believe is called the golden orient. I have eaten there twice now with no complaints whatsoever. Great food, reasonably priced if you're fat bastard like me and they don't seem to have any problem whatsoever with adults using the chocolate fountain with profiteroles :D

EDIT: Said establishment is up on the north A34 junction somewhere around here.

I really didn't rate that place, massive portions obviously but I just didn't find the food that tasty. Mind you its all pretty mild, and you know I like my food to have a kick!

I find it best at week-ends when they are turning greater quantities of food over, during the week the food is sometimes in the hot trays a bit too long and loses flavour.

Obviously, because a packet of scratchings and a warm cheese and onion sandwich really is where it's at for the great Midlands culinary experience??? Do us a favour.

But the thread title is 'must eat in Stafford' which is why the general info supplied is about Stafford eateries, yes you can mention further a field but where do you stop then? The Hotel Du Vin* in brum has to be the best place I have ever eaten at, but I didn't put it in the must eat places cos then the thread ( like SO many others) gets derailed.

*Mentioned merely to emphasis my point
