Many moons ago, when I first started on this internet malarky and domain squatting was rife, we had an issue with a site that checked to see if your domain was available. A customer had found nearly a dozen names he was tempted to use, all of which were available. A week later he was visiting us for a meeting, and we suddenly realised every single domain he wanted was now registered, all to the same company. They did not appear affiliated in any way with the first company, but it was an interesting coincidence. Upon visiting any of the sites, you were presented with an offer to buy the domain for a few hundred quid.

So he paid for 2 hours of my time putting random possible business names into their search box to see what happened, and a large number of them got registered within a few days. At least it cost them a few quid too!

basically I'll only buy the .co.uk address anyway probably... but if somebody already has the .com then it's too easy for someone to accidentally visit the wrong website.
In buying the .co.uk it's unlikely for a similar reason that anyone would bother registering the .com later for the same reason.

Also, there's no .IT so no you can't suggest chickensh
lol ;)

@tek this is another reason why I'll probably register one today since this discussion has taken place - just to be safe!! lol

Unfortunately the word Chicken has been used by very evil people (Paedophiles) for a number of years. I suggest that you steer clear of it if you can.

People also still call their kids "chicken" and eat "chicken dinner", but I've never known anyone to think of it offensively. What does everyone else think?
Unfortunately chickens really are chickens so it's a bit unavoidable! lol ;)

Yes I agree it is a shame, chicken is certainly not offensive but the word has been hijacked. If you look at some of the content filtering and associated technology that schools use to keep children safe you will be amazed what words are looked for and their context. I know this company well and they are constantly on their guard like many others in the industry http://www.securus-software.com/index.html

If content filtering software can't distiguish between a website that actually sells and talks about CHICKENS and uses the word in another sense, I wouldn't rate it very well!! If my new site was to be blocked by schools that wouldn't bother me anyway, it's the grown ups at home that I would want the hits from.

Decent content filtering "should" look at the context a word is used in. I don't think that something along the lines of "These chickens can lay up to 300 eggs in their first year" should be booted out, surely?

I recall the story of a school that couldn't book their annual pantomime tickets because this year's show was Dick Whittington....

In your case you probably ought to avoid all mention of cocks.

Well I've settled on chirpychickens.co.uk in the end, after having a vote between the family on all of the options from my own choices plus those from you guys.

Withnail - You came in EXTREMELY close second with clickachicken - so close that it almost ended up a coin toss! As you were the forumite who seemed the most determined to help me find something (aswell as coming up with serious suggestions) - have a free PC repair on me next time you run into problems (labour only of course)

Thanks to everyone else for trying too.
