I've just had a call from 0234 005 0550 from somebody calling herself Angela Brown, informing me that she's been told that I have debts of over £1,000. She seemed genuinely surprised when I told her that that was false information. 'Surely you have over £1,000 unpaid credit card debt, loans, etc?' I told her again that this was untrue and asked her who had told her this. She tried to give a woolly answer with no facts or real information in it, so I asked her again and she hung up. The number that came up appears to be false. I tried to ring back to hassle them, but it just doesn't work....

Dodgy dealings my friend. You should report it, to whom I don't know, Trading Standards perhaps??

I had a 'I'm calling from your bank' call once where the guy seemed to know nothing, eventually got out of him they were just a call centre dealing with lots of companies and weren't actually my bank at all.

Its a right pain

I get around a half dozen each and every day - to my business numbers, the price of being on the net

If it is your home/personal number then its probably pot 'luck' Or even a scientific pot luck - Stafford is in a top ten league table of places about to collapse coz of public sector workforce percentages ( allegedly )..

Mine are usually selling advertising or promises of first page on Google..

Its a pain.. but the sods are also trying to earn a living too so I tend to be v brief and assertive.. not resorted to a rant just yet, thats when they win..

I've told Trading Standards, as BT don't want to know, with me not being their direct customer any more, despite it being their equipment that has supplied me with a false number. That's what really interests me, I would not have expected this sort of call to produce a number.

I was told that sales calls are not allowed to block their numbers any more which means that when you receive a call from a blocked number it isn't a sales call - that's the theory anyway. I suspect though that the number that is displayed when they call isn't the one they are actually ringing from.

If I dial that number back manually then I get 'this number has not been recognised', but if I use ring-back, then I just get a high-pitched tone for a few seconds, then silence....

I suspect it was from one of those companies that offer to 'help' you pay back your debts at a reduced rate. They would just use that line to everyone and eventually would fine someone who really did have over a £1000 of debt.

I have had the odd 'Ocean Finance-type' call, but this one was quite different - very aggressive ( or just assertive? ), but it's the false number that interests me, really..

Tried that. Doesn't come up with an identity, because the number is completely false and doesn't even fit in with the UK system..

Just be grateful you weren't asked if you were single.
