    FDR - Signing off

Hi all, just popped on to say I don't intend to post on the forum anymore. My reasons are varied but have nothing to do with the Forum itself or any other members. Best wishes to you all and happy posting! Cheers - FDR

    Thank God for Labour!

Thank you Andy, its funny - that's what I thought too that the forum was there so that people can put across their point and debate the issues. I understand the other side of the argument and of course doing anything is Syria is fraught with danger and un-intended consequences but I don't see...

    Thank God for Labour!

Such a well reasoned and argued response - doesn't make you look like said idiot either

    Thank God for Labour!

Don't be fooled, all Labour are doing is playing Politics over the Syria issue. Labour fully backed the Government's proposed Commons vote on military intervention until about 17:15 yesterdaywhen just as all was being made ready for the Commons Motion Len MacCluskey (who's UNITE Union control...

The Swan Stafford: Brasserie & Restaurant

Chris - awhile back you had a local guest Ale: Kinver Sunarise (I think it was) any chance you'll get that in again?

    To frack or not ?

It is about building more capacity as well as trying to reduce consumption and improving energy efficiency. Energy policy should be about the full range of strategies to do all of these things. Whilst we can and should do more to make ourselves more energy efficient even if we do everything we...

    To frack or not ?

Agreed, there is little point de-basing things to the level of "you don't have any friends". I find myself pretty much disagreeing with everything HC says and thats usually because he has a set opinion about something and is either totally unwilling or unable to see anything from a different...

    To frack or not ?

True, but then radiation is often perceived as pretty poisonous, especially by the lay person who is your average unwashed protester. I agree it is tenuous, but this shows the problem with fracking and much of the environmental argument - most of it is based around misunderstandings, hysteria...

    To frack or not ?

Also there have been studies linking Radon release from wells. Radon is a highly toxic gas that has been heavily linked to cancer. It is difficult though to pick through all the environmental advice on fracking out there to work out what is probable and what is just hysteria.

    To frack or not ?

Best of luck with the "impartial" bit, especially from HC. There is very little true impartial evidence related to fracking out there, therein lies the problem. I tried in my previous responses to give the environmental downsides of the process coupled with the economic upsides as a way of...

    To frack or not ?

Wow, HC opposed - I didn't see that coming.

    To frack or not ?

It is a process known as Hydraulic Fracturing, called "fracking" for short. As a brief description the process is one of drilling wells into the ground, some to a depth of 3,000m. From the well a mixture of chemicals and water are forced into deep rock layers under great pressure - this in...

    To frack or not ?

They obviously embraced it. Much of the kit associated with the off shore oil and gas industry is on shore in and around Aberdeen with all of the associated environmental & visual blight this brings. The town has also lost a number of its population through rig accidents and helicopter crashes...

    To frack or not ?

You make a very fine point, I think that's the problem. The "lets not frack" viewpoint is dominated by the hysterical green agenda, the "lets frack everywhere" viewpoint is dominated by the money men and their Government chums. I'm not sure where you look for truly independent advice. They've...

    To frack or not ?

Wealthiest town in say Lancashire or Yorkshire could also be described as niche. I should imagine that if you ask the average "Aberdeenian" today whether the oil industry has been good or bad for their town then most would say good - they might not have been so keen back in the 1970's when off...

    To frack or not ?

Possibly not but there'll be job opportunities in areas where there haven't been any for years. Jobs and opportunities in areas brings with it regeneration - have a look at "oil town" Aberdeen as a prime example, it is now one of the wealthiest towns in Scotland since the North Sea oil boom...

    To frack or not ?

Unfortunately the whole subject has been hijacked by the nutter brigade who are now dominating the news on fracking and stopping people getting a proper informed view of what it means and what the pros are as well as the environmental cons. Caroline Lucas is an elected MP. If she wishes to make...

Buying your dead pig from Tesco or Sainsbury?

But intensive meat rearing doesn't tend to use much land as animals are crammed into sheds, pens or small plots. Many of these animals are stored and treated in such poor conditions that they often have a very poor artificial and/or "stimulant" fed diet which also means minimal land for the...

Buying your dead pig from Tesco or Sainsbury?

Indeed. Inconsistencies in the argument are rife. HC claims that any destruction of animals is wrong and yet seems quite happy to condone the loss of wildlife and wildlife habitats brought about by arable farming, that incidentally would be made worse if everyone ate an exclusively vegetarian...

    Purple ribbon around the town

I'll remember that it is an"over reaction" anytime in the future I might find myself scooping my face off the road. On this occasion it had wound around my bike quite well - it may have been a one in a million / unlucky kind of thing and I don't suppose for a minute that anyone set out to cause...
