I was thinking about this a few months ago.

Marginally profligate expenditure pushed me into the red - i have no 'scheduled' or whatever-they-call-it-now overdraft arrangement - and i realised in time enough to shift some funds from elsewhere to avert the ridonculous charges that unauthorised redness incurs.

What, i thought to myself, would you do if you had no other ready source of readies?

Be f**ked over big time was my answer to myself

In my imaginings i saw before me an (sic) terrible spiral of despair. I am fortunate that i do not have to live solely in my imaginings.

If unlucky the debt spiral can be crippling, I knew someone once that every month a large proportion of his wages went to paying bank charges leaving him without enough to live on and having to go overdrawn again and hence more charges the next month. Hi bank wouldn't authorise an overdraft or a loan as they made so much money out of him. Taking money from those that can least afford it is one of the banks most profitable ventures.

Going back to the original question, not without going into debt. I have at least 20k available on cards and can easily raise a loan but I'd much rather not.

I can get my hands on £200 and I consider myself very lucky (and one of the luckier ones) to be able to.

@Floss67 I can imagine is right though when you read it, it brings a lump to your throat, ouch!

I always remember what the great Alvin Hall once said, you should always have 3 months of wage saved in your bank at any one time, which I have, but it's all well and good (and it's probably where Floss's post comes in to it) if you have that opportunity to save but another finding out what that fourth month brings...!

Yes I could, through various means (current account(s), instant access savings, overdraft, credit cards, emergency money in the safe) and I consider myself lucky to be in that position but I'm well aware I'm probably the exception rather than the rule

Floss67 is right though, it doesn't take much these days for the situation to be reversed

You've been in the same room as me, twice, and I've got one like this.

I have no Sky TV

I have no annual subscriptions aside from public utilities

I have no catalogue accounts

I only buy things ( apart from a house ) that I can pay for at that time

My Mercedes-Benz is an old banger

I peel my own spuds

I join no clubs

I have £200 - but it is in foreign currencies

That could be me - but I don't peel spuds - I bought the peel and so, I'll eat it, too.

And I don't have a flash Merc.

Even with a high flying job you're only ever three months away from losing everything

I have a safe too great for emergency cash crisis we have a traveller family who have been cutting our tress for over ten years he never rings I just know around Easter time he will knock the door, I've also had a window cleaner turn up unexpected and I'm not one who normally carries cash so I have it for those unexpected situations and to keep other valuables in.
