This months presents night brings the music from Liverpool, London, Manchester & Birmingham. It's almost like there's a whole world out there!
Hailing from Stevie G territory, Barberos would be defined as noise band in todays murky genre defining climate and by all means noise they do make. Traversing a musical landscape that is by turns structured and chaotic, abrasive and textured, at times reminiscent of Spiritualized freakouts and SpringHeel Jack, Barberos make visceral comlex music that entertains through its unpredicatbility and the wierd visual extra's thrown in.
Currently touring with Barberos are Orion Arm, a more established band than the fairly new Barber boys, Orion Arm are a math rock jazz spazz threesome. In the post-rock world these chaps are working the edges. There are melodies, grooves and progression without losing the shake your head vibe (or jump around vibe) and screams a plenty. (See Review Below).
The third band to be gracing the stage will be Miss Halliwell from Birmingham, who one would define as playing Indie if they were being cheap and easy. Miss Halliwell, perform weird off kilter songs, with distorted vocals, breakdowns and noises that place them somewhere off the more well beaten track. If you crossed Orange Juice with Talking Heads and Televison you might be vaguely in the atomspheric ball park, but not quite at those heights obviously!
Providing acoustical supportings are Damiani from Manchester and no doubt some temporary soothings of the ears with their melodic folk and harmonies. A male/female duo, who are currently playing in the established Mancunian folk scene that centres itself around sweet melodies, intimacy and an attentive audience. This should be a pleasant aural treat, recommended by Stafford's Butler-Williams, also plying their trade 'oop north.
Plus Dj's spinning funk/house/disco/soul etc. til 2am. LATE LICENCE.
8pm onwards £4 / 3 NUS
"SUBBA’S EP OF THE MONTH, ORION ARM - SPLIT - SMALL TOWN RECORDS: With a more liquid funk edge, the bands interplay more playful recalling These Arms Are Snakes in a sword duel with Mr Bungle. Genius, sheer genius. You’ll treasure this EP, then purge it from your system, before swallowing it back, whole. (J.C)"
