So

It's time for a new phone and contract

stress levels v high

Any opinions on Galaxy Note II ? And if I get a 4G account with EE and I can't get a 4G signal does the phone just look for 3 G?

If you can't get 4G it will try each signal type it can in descending order of speed until it finds something that works. The question really would be is the premium for 4G currently worth it, for the amount of use you will get?

I've never used the galaxy note phones, they are a bit big though aren't they?

Not sure of the value of 4G really - not sure how to quantify it...

I think the note phone has a large screen compared to others - but as I don't have any tablet type devices it may have its uses..

I have the Galaxy s4 on EE 4g and i get 4G everywhere i have been so far except in Tescos , the speed difference is amazing i did a speed test and was getting well over 30mb speeds, so i guess you need to ask yourself if you really use the internet on the go enough to warrant the price bump or are you a serious tech head like me who just has to have the latest and best tech.

I get about 2.5Mb, but TBH I'm not sure I need more. That streams fine, and I don't download huge files to my phone. I get wifi in most places anyway, certainly most bars/cafes etc. have wifi nowadays. I like the idea of 4G, but I can't justify the price hike when I only use about 350Mb a month anyway.

I didn't bother to renew my contract with Orange when it came up. 4g sounds great, but at the moment it's far too expensive. Instead I got a sim only One Plan from Three on a 12 month contract, which gives me 2000 mins of talk time, 5000 texts (like I'm ever going to use that) and totally unlimited data all for £15 per month. I've found network coverage fine for where I use it, which is just about everywhere and data speeds easily capable of streaming iplayer or watching live tv. Three also reckon that when they introduce 4G at the end of the year there sill be no price difference for existing customers over what they pay now!!

If you really do need a new phone, why not get a Nexus 4 separately from Google for £240 and hey presto you've got loads of calls, texts unlimited data and a shiney top performing new phone for a lot less than the traditional 24 month phone contract.

Your words have that strong whiff of sense that almost certainly mean this option has just expired..

If I was able to find a young person to enable this situation to appen would I be also able to retain my number?

And how much do you charge to take a pensioner to the shops?

Yes you can also keep your number. You can do it all online if you want, or go into the Three shop and somebody will guide you through the whole process. It sounds far more complicated than it actually is. It's a permanent tariff, not a promotion so it won't have expired.

3 basically use orange as their 2g calls and text network, I've got a sim only contract with them but rolling 1 month with tethering add on paying £17 only use it as a modem at home for all my devices , my everyday phone contract is Giffgaff because I don't get call drop out with them plus I get better reception at work

Yeah, Virgin went down in Holmcroft for a bit last night too.

As for EE, anyone looked at 3? There is a 2000 min / 5000 text / ultd data with tethering SIM only 12 month contract (or £18 for a 1 month rolling) at the min for £15 a month, and will move you to 4G for free when they roll it out. Apparently they already get up to 42Mbps, although I've not used them in ages so can't confirm.
