A cinema planning CONundrum

To start with and to give an example of the point i'm trying to make:

Recent past: Stafford welcomes the proud new owners of the Apollo cinema Curzon*, therefore, the owners saving the building from years of empty space syndrome.

Present: Stafford council hints at having planning application from cinema giants at Riverway (almost opposite Apollo cinema!), therefore, giving a kick in the balls to the in-place-up-and-running-recently-saved Apollo cinema!

...erm, who are these jokers**

* Curzon; 'The Apollo Stafford is open for business as usual. There are no plans for the cinema to close at any point. We plan to refurbish the cinema over the coming months in order to improve the customer experience!
**whom work at the SCC!?

Hmmmm I believe (but could be wrong) That Curzon is an Art House Cinema & when they bought Apollo Stafford last May they agreed to show mainstream films for a year before they stop & it will become Art House only. Therefore they won't be competing with each other.......1 mainstream, 1 Art House. (As of this May?)

Littleme, you got to admit, if a mainstream cinema gets the go ahead (as reported in the Express & Star this week) the cinema we know as Stafford cinema, will take a right kickin' (whatever it chooses to show) and therefore have to call it a day and we'll be left with yet another very large old but great looking gem of a building waiting to fall to the ground, whilst SCC planning & development 'officals' try to find a buyer for the place, no?

Mmmm, Art House cinema in Stafford?

Do we really need three Wetherspoons..?
haa, so true, but i'd take another Wetherspoons, they save buildings from ruin and make them water tight for many a year.

At the moment there's too many empty buildings, and many more to come, but hey we'll have a new tin shed to stare at for a few years till that goes the same way.

I want some inventiveness from these SCC clowns, prove to me you can fill what we have before building is all i ask.

Indeed, I agree...just passing on what I 'think' I know ;)

We very rarely go to the cinema - too bloody expensive! When we do we travel to Newcastle-under-Lyme (more choice) or Burton-on-Trent (3d).

I'm still not entirely sure what kind of films Art House Cinemas show - black & white French films with English subtitles.....or films for blokes in long beige Macks? ;)

Before I got my motorway problem and my world shrank, I used to go to Birmingham a lot, to see films at mac and The Triangle. I think the term 'art house' is a bit off putting. They marketed themselves as independent cinemas, showing a brilliant range of films I could read about but never get to see in Stafford. Films in colour, too!

These cinemas tend to be really friendly, with excellent cake. Far from being dirty mack places, they have actually taken over some of the former sex cinemas - like The Electric near New Street Station. That said, I did once leave The Triangle mid way through a Spanish film, in considerable embarrassment.

If a decent independent cinema opened in Stafford, I think there might be decent demand. There are lots of films I don't get to see now, until they come out on DVD.

I don't go to the cinema because Stafford has a chav infestation, perhaps they will move on if a new place opens and I can visit again.

The only place in the whole of the West Midlands that showed Four Lions when it came out was The Electric. If we have somewhere in Stafford that shows films like that, I’d certainly make an effort to go.

Last time I went to Stafford Cinema they did have a leaflet advertising the 'arthouse' type films they'd be showing - limited to one evening a week. They also seem to be keeping up the theatre showings that Apollo did every now and again.

I thought it a little odd to add the last line in the report:
"It wasn't immediately clear if he had a lawyer."

I understand it's America, but who goes to the pictures with a gun these days. It used to be stink bombs in my yoof.

You have to, just in case they have a gun.
