A449 Staffordshire - A449 Mosspit in Stafford closed and very slow traffic northbound between the Gravel Lane junction and the Burton Bank Lane junction, because of an accident. Police directing traffic.

Spouting nonsense since the day I learned to talk
Heard it on TalkSport about an hour ago. Must be bad to make the national radio.

Sounds very unpleasant all round :( If driving legally, a crash on that bridge is very very unlikely. Sadly people speed excessively over it in both directions and would not be surprised if this turned out to be a contributing factor. It is common to see people racing down the hill then applying brakes to round the bend on the bridge, or to ignore the change from 40 to 30 completely coming into Stafford. I hope the person who's fault it is gets prosecuted.

Ignorant speculation

I got stuck at the Acton Gate roundabout at about half past three and had to divert through Acton Trussel, with scores of other drivers. It wasn't pleasant.

There was no sign of police directing traffic at that time, and according to Radio Stoke the accident was an hour old by then.

Not ignorant, based on experience. It is a location that needs more speed enforcement because once all those "I'm a safe driver"s are past the last speed camera they think driving like a maniac is acceptable. I have seen more than one person nearly lose control on that bridge. Whilst the causes are not yet confirmed for today it does not detract from it being a section of road with a speeding problem.

There can be problems with drivers turning into Barn Bank Lane or Gravel Lane without signalling or pulling out of them in front of traffic.

There can be problems with drivers experiencing near-vomit-episodes-on-account-of-noxious-canine-bowel-evacuations-on-the-back-seat, as we have learned only this very week.

There really are just too many variables...

Today seemed to be an especially crazy day for driving - I only did around twenty miles and, yet, I could have filled a entire page of the 'mad driving' thread with incidents....

You have no idea of the facts of this particular accident, therefore any comment you may have on it before the facts are released is ignorant.

But at least it gives you a good excuse for trolling.

Read what was written - carefully, as clearly you haven't.

I drive over the Moss Pit railway bridge at least twice a day and I have done so for over 10 years. In that time I have only seen a handful of idiots drive erratically over the bridge and along that stretch of the road. The majority of drivers I see do drive safely.

Henryscat you seem to have a very poor impression of drivers. Do you not think the majority of drivers do drive safely and broadly keep within the speed limit? The majority of drivers do not need speed enforcement cameras in order to ensure that we drive to the speed limits, we do that anyway.

If you only drive over there twice a day that is a very limited snap shot. Try crossing the road anywhere between Acton Gate and School Lane when the traffic is busy. Watch the speed of traffic when the camera van is there and when it isn't- the difference is astounding. When driving down the hill at 30mph out of Stafford towards Acton Gate it is common place to be tailgated, or for cars in front to pull away at such a rate that they are doing 40-50mph. Also try cycling down there- another not uncommon occurrence is drivers overtaking cyclists on or near the bridge and breaching the double white lines for the sake of another 30 yards when it is safe to pass.

My post said, I drive along the road at least twice a day. I drive along the road during the rush hour Monday to Friday and over the weekend. I have also driven along the road when the camera van has been there and when it hasn't. I have also lived within the area for over 30 years, as such I have good knowledge of the road. I have also run, cycled and crossed the road many, many times over the past 30 years.

In light of the release of the details that the driver of one of the vehicles involved in the accident was a 75 year old man, are you still of the view that the crash was caused by speed. I've had the misfortune of seeing a number of boy racers and none of them have been pensioners!
