air pollution monitor

I'm a keen cyclist and recently became aware of a number of people being given free air pollution monitoring devices.

The device is called an airspace tag and monitors air pollution and the results being mapped and aggregates created from all users to show the extent or pollution in a given area.

The IoT device itself is really quite a marvel of creative thinking and manages to somehow scanvenge energy from wireless signals (3G and wifi) to recharge the battery. (Google freevolt to learn more about how this works)

To buy the device is £50 but there is a scheme at the moment where they are giving away free devices.

A link to apply to take part in a mapping scheme and obtain a free device is given below. The idea is to map the air pollution in London. However I believe the creators are also interested in mapping pollution in other areas so maybe worth applying anyway, maybe state you live near the site of a large industrial fire or some other such reason as to why they might want to provide you with a free device.
Otherwise the link below provides details on how to purchase.

Registered for one yesterday and it arrived just now. Normally priced at £50 but free using the above link. (note I do not live inside the M25 so the link is a bit misleading as I stated in the earlier post)

Might be of interest to cyclists, walkers or anyone who spends time outside.

Just seen an email too, thanks. Can we see each others data? Obviously a privacy risk knowing whose data is whose but was wondering if we get to see pollution in areas we haven't been?

It arrived, its currenly calibrating, but so far I'm seeing one massive omission - a way to fix it to your bag or whatever. Surely its much more use if its not inside your bag, yet there is nowhere to affix a strap.

Looks like it will be OK in a bag. From the FAQs:
How do I store my Tag? »
Thats the best bit…you can keep it in a location that suits you! Just don’t use an air-tight bag or it won’t measure the air round you! And please keep your Tag away from liquids as it is not waterproof. The Tag performs best between 0 – 40 degrees Celsius.
