Seems prof Nutt has a few interesting ideas, an alcohol substitute than doesn't let you get trollied, but can be 'turned off' with a tablet to enable you to drive home. Whats the betting they wont let him do proper trials as its a drug?

An alcohol substitute that mimics its pleasant buzz without leading to drunkenness and hangovers is being developed by scientists. The new substance could have the added bonus of being "switched off" instantaneously with a pill, to allow drinkers to drive home or return to work. The synthetic alcohol, being developed from chemicals related to Valium, works like alcohol on nerves in the brain that provide a feeling of wellbeing and relaxation. Finally because it is much more focused in its effects, it can also be switched off with an antidote, leaving the drinker immediately sober.

There was a really good program on Iplayer that featured this. An alcohol counsellor examined his drinking habits and tried this substitute. Showed him getting the buzz and the antidote, very interesting viewing. Horizon - Do I drink too much? no longer on iplayer but may be available elsewhere.

Mine's a pint please!

Now, invent a method which allows smokers to smoke IN pubs again but without polluting the air for others... and you might JUST get me back into a pub! ;)

EDIT:-- and please don't point me to one of these ;)

I did listen and watched it on iPlayer. I liked the bit where he describes the effect of taking the antidote pill.

he's not wrong.. how does this differ from producing any other recreational drug?? look at the recent tabloid scandals about the various new "research chemicals" that have popped up in the last few years, and the subsequent legislation banning them that has been rushed through.. these were developed for exactly the same reasons as Nutt's "regret-free alcohol" - for people to get off their face - but of course people/the daily mail/etc. just see "drugs" and think they must ban them..
