Seems the gunman actually survived, he is a psychiatrist at the base. Was about to get deployed and obviously didn't like the idea, guessing cos he was a Muslim but he could just have been scared of combat I suppose. Although being a psychiatrist he shouldn't be near the front line I'd have thought?
