Android Apps

Still not got my phone, but had a play with MyCults Hero on sat and it was pretty good. So what killer apps do you lot have, anything you'd consider essential?

Just been looking at wavesecure which looks pretty cool, install on your phone and you can track its location, what its being used for, any new SIM installed and its new phone number, get the numbers off the new sim to hassle the thiefs mates etc. Could be interesting!

Not really apps, more widgets but thought it might give you some ideas.

Needs a bit of a reorganise though as you can see.

As for apps, i've got loads but it depends on what you want... there are so many out there so you have to get personal recommendations rather than just searching...

Barcode scanner is a MUST for when out shopping, but also for reading QR codes such as this one....

(the barcode above when scanned would bring you to the forum :) - its great fun, you can create codes for text, phone numbers, web addresses.)

Ha ha, no wookie, you get 7 homescreens.... in effect it is one screen but not all on screen at once if that makes sense.

The 4th one is my "home screen" but a swipe left would give the 5th, 6th and 7th screens.... right would give 3, 2 and 1.

It looks a mess above, but when I awaken my phone this is what I see:

Its called shootme if you don't have barcode scanner - another truly great app.

Otherwise I think you are screwed.

woah, my missus has got an HTC Hero (t-mobile g2) and the OS doesn't look as good as this! wha' g'warn? we just updated to android 1.6 a couple of weeks ago, which seemed to do bugger all over the pre-installed 1.5 tbh..

she's been looking for a simple calendar app, because all she wants is today's date and pertinent appointments to be displayed on the home screen, which her built-in one won't do apparently.. this appears to be exactly what you have above, though!

also, your gmail icon looks a lot better than hers.. and what's with the "SMS/mins" indicator on the second screen grab? is that showing you how many SMS/minutes you have left??

I'm running the custom MoDaCo 3.1 rom which everyone in the Android community raves about. Have to root your device to get it on and would probably void the warranty if they ever knew you did it but easy enough to switch back. Rooting has many other benefits too so well worth doing.

The calendar is "Smooth Calendar" =

The gmail icon is nice isn't it... looks a bit sharper than the stock one and best of all it will show the little icon indicating the number of unread mails like the text messaging app does. Its called gmail unread count =

Yep correct on the counter, it keeps track of number of texts sent / number on minutes used. Text goes red when you go over your free allowances. Its called "FreeWidget" =

The last one is AudioManager Widget and it does what it says on the tin.... volume levels for each type of sound. Can also get a smaller version that takes up less space

IMPORTANT!!!

If you have an Android phone (or possibly if you are getting one) then you NEED WaveSecure in your life.

HOWEVER apparently they are giving free lifetime service to android users if you register before 31st Jan 2010.

So get in there quick and register....

I think you probably could register without the phone but since you should get yours in time I would wait.

Obviously if it gets to the 28th / 29th then just register and see what happens.

I love HTC, but battery is a big problem. I have no experience for two days working without recharging the battery.

I agree, it is a bit power hungry but at the end of the day its a big colour touch screen, and you want a fast processor and still have a small and light phone... its always going to be a trade off.

It it possible to get better battery life though by turning off always on mobile data, using 2g data networks, dimming the screen when possible, using task killer or similar to kill apps you don't need running etc.

My HTC does my head in, I've come to the conclusion the windows OS is absolutely fine, better than fine in fact, however HTC have installed their own software on top of it called touchflo and it has destroyed this phone for me. also the htc application for mms/sms etc. sucks, as does the photo album, contact list and also onscreen keyboard. If/when I have time I am going to see if i can run it without the crappy htc UI.

As for the battery.....pffffft! It's the size of Lichtenstein and lasts about as long as a slice of beef wellington on andreas's plate.

In the meantime I am thinking of ordering another handset because this one is irritating me something chronic...

Android seems the way forward - HTC android users - do you have to use HTC's proprietary UI?
