Changes at the Guildhall.

I doubt that was a problem the year it was built.
Anyway, it depends what you're looking to fill the units with!

That'll bring the shoppers in. NOT!

Yet another reason not to go into the Guildhall.

Well there has been plenty of people excited about the gym coming, and the fact they can do some shopping at the same time too before they workout.
A gym being in a shopping entre is a concept that has already been tried and tested by the new owners in many of their other centres.
Why doesn't everyone think a little more positive, it's all doom and gloom all the time.
There is obviously still a lot of people that like Stafford as I've had a really busy week.

Does anyone know if there are pictures of the Guildhall when it originally opened?

I remember it being quite a grand affair when it opened up...One distinct memory was the unit where River Island is now used to sell of random stuff, bit like a pound land....but I also remember bins of Kenner Star Wars 3.5" figures......

I think I remember a store that sold a lot of scented candles as well...but cant quite be sure?

It's a shopping centre, not a leisure centre. Gyms may work in places like this in big cities but I have my doubts it will work here. I would like to be proven wrong though but my first choice in the centre would be shops.

But how many retailers are looking to set up in town centre locations anymore? Not as many as 20 years ago pre internet and before retail parks had their restrictions loosened.
Town centres and shopping centres need to diversify to regenerate themselves and get people to visit them. As we have discussed in other threads, cheaper and longer parking would encourage people to spend a bit more time round the town.

Enjoying a drop of red.
Better shops in Stafford would encourage me to visit more often.
I only go into Stafford now for the eateries. There isn't much in the town centre to entice me in apart from that.

Everything else I can get in the out of town places or on the internet.

I think you are being a little naive expecting many people on here to be more positive. Negative is always the most popular.
Example - The town is dying! New shops are not the ones we want or in the wrong place.
We can't find a place to park. But nobody comes in to town any more. The new multi storey is ugly.
And if you dare to have an opinion to the contrary (eg Henry's Cat or Gareth) then there is usually a clique that will gang up against you.

Morrisons isn't going to be built. The Post House won't last ( I'm sure this may come true one day but I recall this being said the moment it opened). I'm sure there were comments about the Riverside Art gallery not right for Stafford.

It is better than many other forums - less swearing, nastiness and some very informative posters but by their nature forums allow people to vent anger and frustration and so negative is very popular.

That's a nice dig at a lot of people @james w !

I don't think having a gym within the Guildhall is a good thing, it's certainly not an incentive for me to visit the place and I'm guessing it will be the same for a lot of other people. The Guildhall has always suffered from not having a flagship department store in it, M&S or suchlike should have been heavily encouraged to move there when it was built.

Stafford used to be a bustling, prosperous town. Now it feels like a town in it's death throes.

Most people have no issue with driving to the gym, and few do it on their lunch breaks. Will this one be open later?

The operators of the gym are I-motion gym. This will be their second site in the country after Rotherham. I hope their formula works in Stafford, but the location seems very unusual.
