I was taken aback a bit by
this post some moments ago, but otherwise it's not something that has loomed large thus far.
I think that Israeli representatives have done a good job in enmeshing anti-Israeli sentiments with anti-Semitiic ones in the hive-mind of political discourse, for sure. But we have to be clear here that part of the reason for the prominence of this story is that a Labour Councillor posted some sort of Holocaust denial shiz, for what he then claimed in retrospect was to 'spark' some kind of debate.
Now i would argue that anti-Zionism is not equal to anti-Semitism, because it isn't - unless, of course, you can convince me otherwise - but it would be a mistake to think that they are not cut from the same cloth.
Holocaust denial can't be part of any debate that could possibly describe itself as 'healthy'. Any such debate is
ipso facto diseased because of it.
The 'Left' in this country has, rightly or wrongly, aligned itself to the Palestinian cause. There is much merit in this, obviously - a great wrong has been perpetrated against the Palestinian peoples that is recognised by the
League of Nations UN - but it has fostered an unhealthy mistrust that can't be resolved by extreme positioning.
I have a lot of sympathy for Israel as a Nation State, which is something that can't be said for most of its neighbouring States - if you lived in a street surrounded by neighbours who refused to acknowledge your right to even exist, you would probably think you were entitled to feel a bit paranoid.
The entire debate has been poisoned, and it is unlikely to ever be anything but.
