If so, and like me you've decided against paying back your loan, it may be worth noting that they will now register unpaid debts with credit agencies if you do not defer or arrange alternative payments. I'm OK, luckily the threshold always goes up faster than my wages (luckily? I'd pay it back if I earnt that!), however they now write to you and if you don't respond within 28 days it goes on your credit history.

I never used to contact them when I moved house, have decided to this time!

What age is it that they write it off? 45 or something? The rate I'm going, I'm never going to quite earn enough (though as you say, I gladly would if I got the salary).

I was one of the first lot of students to get a loan. The princely sum of about £500. Always intended to keep on deferring until (I think) 50, or 25 years, whichever was sooner. But then I had a baby and the hassle of getting the DSS to write and stamp my child benefit was too much for £9 per month so started paying it back. Blimey! When I think about it, I'd be getting close by now... about 18 years ago. I am an old fart!

And she worked for them! Just imagine the hassle for a real person.

thanks for the heads-up.. like you, i always just let them contact me about deferring, and if i happen to have changed address or anything then i leave the ball in their court.. i was suppose to renew my deferral last november, but haven't heard anything from them - now you've got me a bit worried! this new policy hasn't kicked in yet, has it??
