Anyone play any board games, particularly Scrabble?

If yor on facebook there's a very nifty Scrabble application - very handy, all on-line, none of this actual meeting up!! (I'll happily play you).
Not over Facebook with me, you won't, Wormella :) Sorry, call me a luddite and a technophobe (You're a luddite and a technophobe - Ed.), but I prefer to play board games on a *board*, with *real opponents*. I used to think there wasn't a difference; that the rules and the system were the game, and the technologies used to play it (be it bytes in a computer memory or bits of cardboard and plastic) were interchangeable. Heck, in the absence of a human opponent, I used to be happy to play against an AI. Now I've come to the view that playing games is a social activity more than a solitary one. So it's one of the few activities I used to do on my own, but now try to do with others as far as possible. (Puerile juvenile joke possibilities acknowledged. :) )

So Wormella, if you want to play Scrabble, PM me and we'll sort out a time for me to bring my board down the pub. :)

To be Scrabble-specific for an example, there's nothing quite like putting down two seven letter words on successive turns and watching your opponent's jaw drop as though someone's just cut their mouth muscles.... When the Facebook version does *that*, I'll play. :)
Very valid argument that Wookie..very valid indeed..well unless the game happens to be strip poker ( not a board game I know) in which case I reckon you could say playing online is better for some or indeed the majority of players anyway :D
Online strip poker? How pointless is that? About as pointless as playing strip poker against a computer, that's how.
I prefer Strip Monopoly myself, anyway.

I'm all for this board games idea mind there was a time when the firkin (circa decently clean lavvies ) used to let the adults play the games, jenga and the huge connect 4 and lots of card and board games too . It was a good excuse to go to the pub in the winter as I recall and for people new to the town to meet people . Let's face it generally when the evenings draw in we all start macrame or tai chi or something equally radical and in most cases short lived .

This also makes me think that as the forum is getting larger and more people get involved A ND with winter heading on its way in a bit . It might be an idea to knock a few forum teams together, darts, draughts, chess, ma jong cribbage, doms , cluedo, whatever together and challenge a few of the pubs or something .
Sterling idea - I'm in :)

Even better he said getting reet exited now why not have some sort of inter forum competition ?? something charity type thing everyone pays a quid or a fiver or something and that is their entry fee for the game? at the end of the tournament /season the winners get the sense of achievement and pride for winning and they also get the feel good factor for doing something nice. This could also help a bit of publicity for the forum local rag etc . I dunno maybe donate the money to the children's home or give the old folks at the home a top christmas or some other equally deserving charity that generally doesn't get much of a mention Just another one of my thoughts regarding the publicity . Could offer cheap but valuable prizes like custom Stafford forum Ts with tournament/date and winner status? ( you wont see many of them will you?) it's not that bad a plan tho I think..or is it??

NOTE I don't do organising out of office hours as my wife/mates will happily testify but would be happy to participate in something if someone with oodles better organisational type skills does it .

anyway that should maybe be on a different thread but thoughts folks? or prayers for my sanity ! :teef:
*That's* the way forward... Let's do it.
Giant chess tournament in BTTF Square, perhaps. :)

However, I admit I only go in there when accompanied by merchandise fans or roleplayers...
I'll accompany you. I am neither of the above really but have potential. Besides, I went in there once on my own and dude behind counter scared me. :( No idea if it is this Phil you speak of as there were two behind counter at the time. Does he have a dislike of girls entering a typically blokey realm - or do I look shifty?
Phils ok with females - Matt was always a bit iffy. the first time I ever went in I remember everyone shuffaling away nervously to the other side of the room like scared sheep!!

I was a big roleplyare, I just haven't made it into 2 Fat since I got back in to Staffs last year.

The co-op department stores toy section is quite good.

- Fair play on the face to face combat / board game ethics. I refuses to play on-line roleplaying for the same reason. I didn't care about being and eolf - I cared about sitting around a table with a group of people, some beer and some Ginsters!

Could we inspire a pub to have them on hand. I'm thinking Joxer's would be perfect for ir - I've seen it in other places.

I used to like playing a game called Blood Bowl but it belonged to a pal and I can't track down a complete set for myself :(
I may still have that, I'll have a word with my mum and see if its still in the loft at hers. Had the dungeon bowl addon too, a few painted teams, extra rulebooks etc. Not seen them in about 10 years though, so they may have gone to the big charity shop in the sky :(

As a nipper, I enjoyed playing 'Doctor Who - Battle for the Universe'. I still have a complete set - with a minor yet notable absence of instructions. Not having perfect recall of being 10 years old, I'm struggling somewhat. I did track down a copy online a while back, but the chap that scanned it in could have done with a lecture on contrast levels. :(

Think that shall be my mission for the weekend.

Maybe I looked shifty then, or had a whiff of shoplifter about me. :ninja:

Shame, I had my eye on a very nice Jason Vorhees model at the time - but left cause unidentified staring dude put me off. Will have to return.

On the topic of board games I spotted a Transfroemrs version of RISK the other day in HMV.
<Whoosh noise as I run out of door to make purchase.>
When shall we have a Forum Risk evening? I could have a tidy-up at my place...

After all that, I never did get the Transformers Risk. Couldn't see it in HMV here (work in Wolves). Got the day off tomorrow though, will scope out the Stafford store.

A Forum Risk evening sounds grand. Although I would only attend such an event if Wookie were to go - not personally knowing anyone else in here and being a girlie. Not turning up to some weirdos place on me todd! Are you a weirdo Mr Sofa?

;)

You'd eat 'em all alive, babe. :P

But yeah, I could be up for this. One question, though:
How do you actually *play* Risk? :)

I'd be up for a Risk evening - better still could we sort out a pub? I think the Tap and Spile were always friendly to roleplayers - might be worth a go.

If everyones going to the Jam night tonight we could, you know, actually meet

If it helps - and it probably doens't - I saw the Transformers Risk in the HMV at Manchester Piccadilly - It is however on Play.com Along with a Starwars version.

Would need a refresher on that myself. Haven't played for a bit. I remember reading the instructions for my Lord of the Rings edition and spending a good hour undertaking some very strenuous face pulling of the confused persuasion. :/

 Jolly good idea - bravo. I quite like the Tap. Anyone else wishing to partake within in walking distance?

 Yes, quite. Although I've only come across mild loons lately. Haven't seen a full blown barmy bunter for a bit. Used to get quite a few venturing in to the Met Bar - entertainment whilst you drink.

That pub is like a Magnet for wierdos - pretty much every time I've been in it I've been approached by one. Nice pub most of the time.

Tap works for me, nice and close to my house... and those who want chinese food after can nip over Fortune City. :)

I've gone off the Met since I realised they glued the books to the shelves. FFS, *what* *is* *the* *point*?!?

In fact, last time I was there, it was new year's eve 2004, and I'd been awake since about 8 am on December 30th. I was probably the weirdo :)

** EDIT ** Edited Wikipedia link, cos forum software seems to break on autolinking URLs with "(" in. (??)

I sometimes drink there, I may be who you're thinking about!

Well, not that often. Sometimes stop in on my way home from work, can't always make it to town before the need kicks in.

They've always been glued down since it's been the Met. It's to avoid supplying locals with missiles. I'm not joking.

Did I meet you in there once covered in black gloss paint - or was that someone else? Still lived on that road with Flems.

Anyhoo - someone on this page voted it the best pub in Stafford - http://www.bbc.co.uk/stoke/mytown/staff/stafford/index2.shtml

For me its the nearest with the most people in that I know. Hang on, that means that most people I know in Stafford are weirdos - umm...

I think you, Flems and Mr Clarke took me in there when I borrowed your floor Halloween 2001. In fact, I suspect it may have been you I was meeting when I was in there on NYE with sleep deprivation. And I was in there to meet you with Adam Gould a few years ago...
I've just realised, kids - I only go in there to meet TFR :)
