I thought they were further down before then, but that may have been another balti. This is probably late 80s though.

Abdul's is what was the King's Head until 1991. It may have had another name in the first incarnation as an 'Indian'.

Ah - it was actually Uncle Buck's Fun Pub for about six months and then became Al Sheikh's after the almost instant demise of that venture.

Not sure when the change to Abdul's occurred.

Anyone else hear this sad news ?

Apparently the guy who own all that area said he intends to increase their rent as soon as their tenancy is up, and Ashiana said it couldn't be justified, so said if he does they'll just close.

Seems like a bit of greed on the landlords part, I mean yes it's busy weekends n such, but there's days I walk past n there's not a sole inside.

I'm shocked by this news, where on earth will we be able to get a curry in town now?

Just have to resort to milling around charity shops in between coffee shop visits.

Where is the variety and diversity of shops these days? It doesn't take much to work out if there are a large number of shops selling the same as you then you need to be at the top of your game and try to stay there.

Alas Ashiana was never up there for me so only went twice and it was always empty whenever I went passed no matter what time of evening.

Bring back the Reynolds bar :)

Anyone trying to run their own business, a business that is not part of a chain or franchise, is having an extraordinarily hard time this year with rapidly increasing costs and overheads and a continual demand for cheaper prices

Unless you are in a similar position you will never know how hard it is

Just saying

That is a fair point, well made Mr M but I don't think Ashiana did very much to differentiate itself from (in my opinion) better Indian restaurants in Stafford.

I do my best to frequent as many local businesses as I can and spread my spending to help them but there are only so many Indian meals you can have in a week. In addition if a restaurant isn't up to scratch I will only make a maximum of two visits before looking elsewhere.

I struggle to see why business rates haven't been scrapped and replaced by a sales tax?
Set up a shop and pay business rates, rent, water rates (even if there is no water!), charge for commercial waste and so on. Or bypass all that and set up online. This isn't a level playing field.

Setting up online isn't really viable for a restaurant. But I agree with the sentiment.

From their Facebook page...

"Ozi and his team at Ashiana will serve their last meals on Saturday 30th June 2018. We would like to thank the people of Stafford and it’s surrounding area for 26 years of support beginning at the Rose of Kashmir in 1992
Factors including increased competition, the general public having less disposable income and Ashiana's overheads increasing significantly have led us to this decision.
Ashiana would love to see all of our customers at least one more time before we close. Ozi"

Pastiche
Ashiana
Bear Grill

All popular but obviously no longer viable.

Is there enough Stafford diners who like individuality in their dining. Or as I suspect, are Stafford folk supporters of chain restaurants only?

Ping.

Most people I know simply don't eat out as much as they used to, that said Ashiana was never on my go to list.

I used to use the Rose of Kashmir and really liked it, I went a couple of times after it moved from the old location but the food wasn't up to the same standard and hubby thought the manager was a bit smarmy, too over friendly with the ladies and completely ignored the guys, so we haven't been back in years, instead opting for a place we both feel comfortable with great food and service. We love Daru Chini in Eccleshall.

Had the worst 'Indian' I've ever had at Ashiana, tasted and looked like Homepride cook in sauce.... rank and disgusting. So many better places to eat in Stafford, surprised it lasted this long.

Will be a loss to the north end of town though, Greyfriars is scruffy enough.

I haven't been to Ashiana for years and years. I knew someone who knew them and I don't know about Homepride but they were definitely ready made sauces. Plenty of really good Indian restaurants in Stafford so not surprised. I agree with @Bob's husband too, manager was smarmy, specially with the ladies.
