The
Tarka Trail is an old railway line that has been converted into a cycle and walking path. It's one of the most picturesque in the country, starting at the higher levels by old Clay workings and working it's way down the
River Torridge through the old town of
Bideford to join the
River Taw and then enter the sea. If you've read
Tarka the Otter you'll note many of the old bridges and places from the story. I've pedalled it many times but I distinctly remember coming across this monument just outside
Bideford for the first time on a bright hot sunny day.
A sobering reminder of times gone by. These lads were a long way from home when this tragedy struck, so close to the end of the War in Europe.
