I liked the food there way back when we used to go, wish there was more available like it to be honest, but he's starting to sound really bitter which is sad and off-putting.

(used to go often when I had more time on my hands, over 3 years ago now)

I too used to regularly visit Bean Encpunter several years ago when it just seemed to be a great quirky cafe with good coffee and good creative food.

Unfortunately it seems like eccentric Jonathan has now gone a little extra mental.

I always got the impression he thought he was better than a lot of people. When he first moved to town and opened BE, he on more than one occasion came into my pub, Market Vaults, didn’t buy anything and just walked around, very weird. After a couple of times on busy Saturday nights, I asked him what he was doing. He said he didn’t see the problem in what he was doing. I said it was not ok for a competitor to just walk in, not even buy a small drink, and basically scope my trade. I explained how weird it would be if I did the same in BE. We left it at that.

Anyway, my point is, he was obviously a bit delusional way back then too.

When you say "doing what we are doing" do you mean overcomplicating what should be a very straight forward situation?

Just looking something up & discovered Bean Encounter Ltd, director Jonathan Cushing, went into liquidation and was dissolved 29 November 2018. JC purchased the equipment, stock, office furniture & goodwill from the liquidators. Begs the question who now owns the Red Door & the Lounge businesses.
