Beer....

Since we seem to talk about local hostelries & breweries a lot on here I thought it high time for a general thread on the good stuff itself. So name your favourites or your least favourites, shout about local brews or ones from far flung places...

I'm currently enjoying a 'tesco finest' (actually made by the awesome Brew Dog) American Double IPA. Nicely hoppy, but at 9.2% I probably wouldn't want a second one.

I'm generally a Guinness drinker, but I do really like Krušovice Mušketýr, and would highly recommend it if you happen to come across it - or if you go the the Czech Republic.

The worst was a 'real ale' called, I seem to remember, 'Sagittarius' - which I sampled in the Tap and Spile about ten/twelve years ago - it genuinely tasted like it was brewed from Airfix glue.

I'm also a Guiness drinker a lot of the time - it's my preferred beverage when I'm out as a musician and don't want a beer I have to think about!

I googled it and it was a seasonal made by Bateman's. Which makes sense as I've had some sublime (XXXB) and some truly terrible beers made by them.

The same can be said of many cask ales, by its very nature it can be spoilt very easy. I have had some fantastic beer in Cornwall Doom bar, Skinners etc but I have also had some very poor pints as well. The Blonde at the Rose and Crown has been consistantly good when I've been in

Wye Valley HPA is poss my all time favourite. A full time beer at The Welly and often making a guest appearance at The Crown.
Joules Blonde is getting a bit of a bending of late.
Away from the hop, Henney's 6% still cider is a jolly nice quaff. 500ml bottles often at three for a fiver in Sainsbugs, currently £1.70 a pop in Asda.

Isn't Guiness also known as Nigerian lager?

Having tasted almost all Cornish beers in the last 12 years we have been on holiday there,
I must say that Sharp's Doom Bar is one of the best. Although Sharp's have been taken over
by Molson so it isn't actually real Cornish anymore. The nastiest I have drunk was an organic
Ale made by Lizard ales of St.Keverne. In their defence I must say it was their first year
of brewing so they did have some teething problems.
Spingo from the Blue Anchor in Helston is also very nice but very very strong.
Especially the Spingo Special.

I can also buy Brew Dog beers in our supermarkets in Holland, but I still want
to find some beers from the very famous DogFish Head (USA) brewery.

Another beer I like very much is Abbot Ale from Greene King

"local" Dutch beers I like are from the "Texelse Bierbrouwerij" from the Island of Texel.

(Heineken is only good for headaches...)

I'm rather fond of golden glory by badger ( brewery's actually called hall and woodhouse). Always get a few bottles when the weathers nice and were BBQing.

I do like more tradition ales and its what I normally drink, but have to say I am a big fan of the fruity/floral types you can get. I remember trying peach melbear sp? in the old P&A once which was also very nice.

I haven't found my favourite beer yet :P I'll have to keep trying it till i do lol. So far 3 candidates are, Fursty Ferret from Badger, Waggledance and Blue Lable from Malta.
My search continues :)

i've never even heard of it! blates need to get some.. thanks for the heads-up :)
'Tis top-notch stuff. The Stafford Beast gave me some a while back for rendering Mrs Stafford Beast and her belongings several hundred yards under cover of darkness.

If you like bottle Guinness, then give it a try. Fit for a (Nigerian) prince.

That has the look of a Fenian origin. They tend to make a point of letting you know if it's the genuine African stuff...

A no brainer. My 2 faves, in order of preference:-

1 Titanic Plum Porter
2 Slaters Top Totty

Worst I have ever had, Carling Black Label. Seriously, how the heck do people drink the stomach souring muck?

Surely it's just called Carling now? I don't think it's had a 'Black Label' for as long as I've been able to legally buy it.

Worst beer I've had in a long time would be a can of John Smith's Bitter thrust into my hand on one of those family occasions when someone else got to do the beer run. No Hop, no body, in fact hardly any taste at all. I'd assume it was a cheap way of getting drunk, except at 3.5% you'd need to drink huge quantities...

I know CAMRA types sneer at European lagers, but at least they have a bit of some kind of flavour going on, even if it is fairly inoffensive.
