Went to the Forester last night..........really did not fit in......do not have any tatoos or lip piercings. Had a laugh though. BUT HOLY MARY MOTHER OF GOD what the hell has happened to that place. For a town centre pub it is so run down. The bogs were an absolute disaster zone had to hitch mey jeans up and aim at a hole three feet away. I think it had its hayday c1995. My fav. pub in town at the moment is Joxers. Really enjoyed the Railway at the Garden Party but that glass washer really stinks.

With you on that one Moley! What a hole. A few months back I went in for an early one for old times sake! Big mistake, in what passes for daylight in the dingy hole, it looked appalling! If I ever go in again I will take a peg for my nose.

Sadly I don't go out enough to really express an opinion of any value on best Pub in Stafford! But I could give you a list a mile long of the places it isn't!

Sheridan (now Forrester) was the scene of my second attempt at under age drinking! After The Penny at 15, I left it a while, all rather embarrassing! Didn't really learn anything because when I went to the Sheridan with three mates, we ordered a lemonade, 1/2 of lager, and two creme de menthes! and I was wearing a velvet jacket! (thought it made me look older)

Way hayy I'm in Stafford!!!!!
Glad you've found your spiritual home, jamesb! I know the folks round here seem like lunatics for the most part (gon2seed, i'm looking at you lol) but if there's one thing they know, it's drinking holes ;)

I was in there Friday night, with a few forumites, you should have come over and said hello :)
And I don't have a single tattoo. Or a lip piercing. Or any piercings at all, in fact.

And IMO, the bogs in the Forester are a palace compared to those in Esprei. I'm sure the ones in Esprei will be very nice when they're finished...

I was in the Forester a couple of weeks ago and it warmed my heart to see youngsters expressing themselves so colourfully - it was a bit like the Bird / Nelson / Whiteley days back in '91. Ah! The gents in the Forester should be condemned, and I ain't joking, either. Esprei's loos are a terrible joke, too, as are the landlord's promises that they will one day be transformed into gold-plated luxury bogs. Awful. Anthony (Esprei's landlord) - if you are reading this - get yer gents sorted out!

Tried to get into the Greyhound, walked straight past it 1st time! and then found the door either stuck or locked....perhaps they saw me coming!!, about 1pm that was.

Checked out Joxer Bradys, bit quiet but was lunchtime, seems OK, Wetherspoons (is that an old cinema?), they are all pretty much of a muchness. And then the one opposite w/spoons across the river with the terrace, friendly place, but forget the name.

Gonna check out the Grapes for open jam night later tonight. Still *not* found a pool table, I know there is a rileys, but I reckon pubs are best for pool and making conversation.

So if anybody in the Grapes tonight sees a straw chewin' wurzel, yodelling at the bar with a strongbow in one hand and pipe in the other, please say hello!

The Bird in Hand on Earl Street (by the church yard) is probably best for town centre pool. they have a whole room for pool with 3 tables. It used to be a good pub but not been in for years - probably much teh same and in need of refit. good beer garden though.

All the people I was with just seemed to have had their lips pierced or had a new tatoo. They are much younger than me.............feeling sorry for myself (age wise). Atmosphere was good in the Forester.......lease is up however............pub becoming run down tends to precede this. Don't recall any forumites being there. Mind you I was pissed. I'm also short sighted and wasn't wearing mey glasses.
In future I will say hello if I recall anyone from the railway..........sorry

Esprei is next door to Joxer's. Used to be Satchmo's / Bar Utopia / Baristas / have I missed any?

Jamesb: Is the open mike in the Grapes still run along the lines of "we'll let you have a go for one song if we know you, as long as you don't mind us playing along"?

I went to the open mike in the Star and Garter. See you next week, everyone. :)

Yup, seemed pretty much that way (although to be fair they did let them play at least two songs) , but rather than open mic night I'd say "resident band with guests" (and the barman charged me 2 quid, sure the sign said free??) although whilst the main guitarist and Bass player had a break some young lads did a great rendition of come together with a new drummer, keyboard player stayed throughout.

Really good night and loved the muse, just hope this new alarm clock works and I wake up in time for the morning! 1st day and all that!

Can see this becoming a regular sunday night, might cause problems when i start at 6am though!

Where's the star and garter wookie and on what night?

Hehe, I was at the Forester friday too. It's more of a half-way pub to meet up and then move elsewhere.

I lve Abbot Ale, so my place is Spoons right now.

I'm sure this will be a shock for many, as my fave pub is the Railway Inn too! It's got the right blend of people, good beer, a nice big beer garden, friendly staff etc......and one of the best things is that it's not on a cut-through root to town from anywhere, so it doesn't get full of undesirables (well...us lot excepted).

Ah yes, they tend to keep the entrance off County Road locked until early evening (never quite worked that one out).

You have to use the entrance round the other side (the one that's rapidly disappearing from view behind the new flats that are being built).
