Bowls

New to the forum and apologies if anything like this has been posted before.

Why is flat green bowls not played in Stafford ... or Staffordshire for that matter? I know crown green is played a lot and I am playing a little bit in a local league, but I was brought up playing flat green bowls.

Has anybody ever approached the local council to try and get a flat green built? Any thoughts on whether it is a viable proposition?

They play flat bowls at the old MRI club on St Leonards Avenue one evening a week it's indoors, if thats any help, the phone number is 01785 223251, and I think the name of the lady in charge of all activities in the club, is Arlene Clements.

Hope this is of some help to you.

Welcome to the forum.

Thanks for quick replies. I have been to the green in Tamworth (near the Snowdome) and they are affiliated to Warwickshire Bowls Association. For a county association to be formed there has to be four greens (I think) in the county.

Sort of knew about the indoor at St Leonard's - think it might be short mat.

Suppose I should have asked on my initial post whether there are any flat green bowlers in Stafford(shire)? And whether any would be interested in getting together to try and start a club in 'the creative county'.

I am having to play my flat green bowls in Derbyshire - even made the county team and qualified once for the national championships.

That simple, and i thought Crown was the royal version and flat green was for the working class.....

So - are there any flat green bowlers in the Stafford area? How many people who play short mat in the winter months would be interested in playing flat green bowls in the summer months?

If we could get enough people together do you think we could put a proposal forward to the County Council to build some flat greens and start an association?

Morning - me again!
How many people on here play indoor bowls in the winter? Where are the venues to play indoor bowls/short mat bowls ... heard Cannock Leisure Centre is one. And used to be played at Riverway before it was knocked down.

A crown green has a crown ( a very slight dome ) and a flat green is flat.
So essentially the crown green grounds person has just been too lazy to flaten the green properly?? hehe :D

I am unreliably informed that indoor bowling takes at the MRI on St Leonard's, probably on a Monday night. Confirmation has not been obtained on this.

Welcome to the forum acpoynton!

I never realised bowls was so technical!! You sound like a bit of a past master though - good luck in finding / forming your association.

Wouldn't say bowls is as technical as other sports. Very tactical game when played to the highest standard. I have been fortunate to play at high standard - played international lawn bowls for 10 years and competed at two world championships. Currently having to play lawn bowls in Derbyshire as no flat green bowls in Staffordshire. I do play crown green in a local league and a few of the people I play with would be interested in trying to start a flat green club/association.

Anybody interested in playing crown green bowls? The new season will start in April and the club I play at is struggling with numbers for the Friday evening (local) league.
Training can be given ... well, the basics anyways. We play just off Silkmore Crescent ... where Brocton Football Club play their home games.
