Brown Water

The builders on the Bovis site hit a water pipe yesterday, we got flyers at work about it. Worried a lot of the old folk on my ward when they flushed the loo and the water was a lovely shade of brown.

Usually if you need to run it off, you should take a water meter reading before and after you run it off and they'll normally cancel the amount off your bill.

I wouldnt drink it as its sediment and general crap from the inside of the mains pipes which occurs when the water is shut off and pressured up again. Run it off but like the beast says take readings if on a meter and contact them or youll be paying for it.

That reminds me of a story told to me by someone who used to work for Severn Trent.

He got a call from an Angry Customer, who had recently had a water meter installed, who had received a letter notifying him of works in his area and that after they had been completed he would have to run the water until it ran clear.

Angry Customer was most discombobulated that he had had to run his tap for a full TEN MINUTES before it ran clear and demanded to be reimbursed for the water clocked on his meter.

Acquaintance did a quick calculation and worked out that the cost of this would have been ~ 7p. He advised Angry Customer that they would be more than happy to send him a cheque to the value of 7p in the post, if he sent them a SASE...

I still have a letter somewhere from the Inland Revenue informing me that I had overpaid tax to the amount of nine pence and asking me to write to them to confirm that I would like them to send me a cheque for that amount - at the time, a second class stamp was 19p.

All they would ever tell you is that it is safe to drink as long as you boil it first, or to run your tap until it clears (okay if not on a water meter).

Was going to ask around my apartments to see if anyone else had the same problem but it was past 10 and most people were asleep.

That's what I love about Stafford Forum... there's usually someone still awake during the late hours that I am :D

I'm so glad I have found this thread. It was started in the week that I was on holiday and hence I missed it. When I got home, my bath water was disconcertingly brown. It stayed that way for days. I thought it was just our house and didn't know what I should do about it.

Now I know that other people have brown water too, I shall stop worrying about it and enjoy the tanned-effect on my legs.

Should have cleared by now though Flossietoo, unless you have a hot water tank that has filled itself with the stuff. You may need to run it off for a while till it runs clear.

The source of the brown water at our house has been identified as something called an expansion tank.

My husband has been away for the last few weeks and returned in time for said expansion tank to fall off the wall.

"Didn't you think something was wrong when the water was brown?"

"Um...no...lots of people on the Forum had brown water."

"Not THAT brown!"
