Engineer turns up at 8am as promised, looks at the socket and confirms it is a phone line. Has to go back to the cabinet to plug us in, rewire the faceplate and set up the previously missing fibre modem. All sorted, modem is hitting 80/20 so looking good! The router itself is a bit crap, only hit 60/16 through that, but I shall be reusing my 5GHz router anyway so hopefully that one will perform better.

Left my brother testing it for me, will have a proper play when I get home.

I hope you got his name, he is obviously the one who stayed to the end of the course

i find that if i set up QOS on mine it can affect speed if using fibre and its well documented online regarding my model.
so if you do run into speed problems, try disabling QOS if you use it.

Funnily enough my upload was stuck at 3mb, until I realised my router had set that as my QoS level!

Spring 2016 is the target date for 97% fibre internet for Staffordshire

That's according to Staffordshire County Council

If you ask BT, who are being paid to deliver it, they say they have no planned dates for finishing the job..

Parents have just acquired BT broadband as they are effectively the only option where they have moved to. Fault on line, BT man turns up to fix it. He traces the fault to the cable between the house and telegraph pole but then announces he really really doesn't like working at heights!!! Seems a strange career choice then....

I think outlying villages are about 300 feet above sea level

I wonder if they keep the good engineers for cable areas? After all their only competition is virgin, everyone else has no choice but to use a BT line.

Oddly, Staffordshire claims the highest village above sea level in the country.
