Butlins.

So I posed a while ago about locations for a nice, quiet relaxing long weekend away, we were looking for somewhere tasteful and classy with some good eatery's and searching for chocolate box cottages with a hot tub.

And we've booked Butlin's!

Complete turn around and to be honest if you'd asked me a couple of years ago I'd have told you it was my idea of Hell on Earth!

We're going away with two small children (6 & 2) and looking for a compromise between nice for the grown up's and plenty to keep the kids amused wasn't happening. So we opted to just keep the kids happy and thanks to both sets of brilliant parents we've got a handful of child free evenings and a weekend coming up.

So we've booked the hotel, it looks lovely on the website. One of the better rooms, with additional kids 'den', sea views from the balcony and pretty much every activity included in the price. We've opted for the premium breakfast and evening meal option and it's just over £500 for 3 nights for 4 of us. I don't think the prices is too bad and it seems we have everything covered in advance and when you compare the price of Centre Parcs it does seem to be good value for money.

I'm really looking forward to it and the kids are really excited, I just hope it lives up to the marketing.

Has anyone been recently?

Hi

We went to the one at Skegness a few times (for a bike weekend - think they used it to break in the new staff).

For that it was OK. Food was a bit school dinner ish, but did the job. Accomodation was clean but basic.

All the best

So Butlin's was a massive disappointment!

We abandoned a four day holiday within 24 hours.

Half the park was closed for an Irish dancing event and the whole experience felt like we were in the middle of a channel 4 documentary.

The park was far from the polished haven the website promises and the child friendly hotel had an unsafe balcony and an unlockable door that failed to keep my two year old contained within the room.

To be fair the manager was extremely reasonable and resolved the problem with an apology and a full refund.

So off we went to LEGOLAND!

I worked for them between 89 and 95 as a redcoat at Skegness. Different time obviously, I liked it's old fashioned feel. I have returned as a punter 3 times in the time since I left and outside of meeting up with old friends, it was never particularly enjoyable.

I know people who've been to Minehead a few times in recent years - they seem to enjoy it.
In Minehead twelve years ago we stayed in the Wetherspoons.
There's probably not a pint with the breakfast at Butlins !
